A Gaggle of Mets Pitchers
Not sure there's anyone new here but I loved this shot of Mets prospects from around '67 (guessing at the date), many sporting different numbers than we're used to seeing. Thought folks might get a kick out of it. I found it on Twitter, posted by Mets Rewind.
From L to R, best I can tell: Steve Renko, Les Rohr, Al Schmelz, Jon Matlack, [not sure -- Larry Bearnarth?], Jerry Koosman, [no idea], Nolan Ryan, Jim McAndrew, [not sure -- Dick Rusteck?], Dan Frisella. Help filling in the blanks/making corrections would be awesome, if anyone's so inclined. |

Mets IDs
The wacky uniform numbers peg this as an instructional league shot. Hard to date since, even though they were all long gone from the majors, Hinsley was still in the Mets' system through the 1968 season, Hepler and Schmelz through 1969, Bethke through 1970.
The list, by numbers: 21 Steve Renko, 4_ Les Rohr, 16 Alan Schmelz, 36 Jon Matlack, 29 Jerry Hinsley, 26 Jerry Koosman, _3 Jim Bethke, 20 Nolan Ryan, 34 Jim McAndrew, 32 Bill Hepler, 31 Danny Frisella. Last edited by Merkle923; 09-18-2016 at 03:23 PM. |

Seeking rare Rick Honeycutt
Has anyone out there ever picked up any of the 1981 Fleer proof cards. Specifically, I am trying to find an image of the Rick Honeycutt card. I had this once upon a time in a previous tax bracket.
Thanks to you all. |

Felipe Alou(?) 1958
Found a mini-mystery in the Vault. This image (BC 783) is listed as Felipe Alou, as a New York Giant. Alou did not break into the majors until 1958, the Giants' first year in San Francisco. He was signed in November of 1955 and I have not seen any information that would indicate that he was ever called up any time in 1956 or 1957 and that sure looks like the Polo Grounds.
It looks like it could be a young Alou. I can't match it confidently with any other New York Giants from 1956. Can some historian dig up when might have been suited up with the New York Giants or perhaps ID it as someone else? |

Andre Rodgers
It's Andre Rodgers and dates to 1957.
For comparison, here's a San Francisco image (probably from 1960) that is angled similarly to the New York image. |

Mets photo
Three out of those 11 pitchers photographed (Koosman, Matlack & Ryan) combined to win 671 major league games. I'd say that's an extremely unlikely outcome, given the fragile nature of pitching, especially 50 years ago.

Dennis Sherrill 1978
One of the few positives in moving is, that you find stuff you lost the last time you moved.
This won't be mistaken for Ozzie Sweet or anything, but I took this of the Yankees' top draftee washout (fourteenth overall pick in the '74 draft) who played four different positions in his five major league games. If I remember correctly, this was a game in late June, 1978 against the Red Sox for which Sherrill was summoned from West Haven of the Eastern League when one of the middle infielders was injured (that's Brian Doyle behind him). A Few Oakland Pegasus UINs
I have been taking an interest in the Pegasus UIN list in recent weeks, wondering how such a daunting task begins in the first place. But it's one of those projects where just about anyone can find something that helps.
I cleared as many missing Atlanta Braves as I could, but another resource I have I'd almost forgotten about. When I renewed my interest in the hobby a few years back, someone on eBay was selling data CDs with photos of every player from certain teams and eras; his name was not on the product, and I regretfully do not remember. But one of them covered the Oakland A's from 1968-97. A couple of these images came friom that disc. 1973 Rob Gardner (from okcochise) 1972 Mike Kilkenny (from Bottomms cards) 1977 Jim Umbarger (from disc; was originally Lexibell?) 1988 Ed Jurak (from disc) 1991 Brad Komminsk (from back of 1992 Score card) Hope these help! 1966 John Herrnstein Pegasus UIN
Can't believe I had this all along. Image of John Herrnstein on 1966-2013 Atlanta Braves data disc (see above post). Pretty sure this was originally in the Braves' game program, which was updated through the year with roster changes.

In Search of Nellie....
As the T.V. folders steam through the "BRs", Nelson Briles was again showcased and it brought to mind a question. Why are there no other images of him with the Royals in 1975 or earlier?
I suppose I'll put this to you Merkle as I'm more curious than anything else. We know that Topps took his pic in 1974 as it is in the 1975 set. Yet seemingly nothing has come to light from Topps that represents his other full season with KC. I'm aware that the SSPC folks got him as well but again - just curious. Mike Brewer 1986
Mike Brewer was an outstanding athlete (basketball and baseball) coming out of Foothill College in Los Altos, CA....He was drafted in the 1st round of the January phase of the draft in 1979. He played for the Royals organization thru 1984 and spent 1985 with the Indians AAA club. He returned to KC in 1986 and made his big league debut on June 11th versus the Mariners going 0-3. He stayed with the Royals thru June and played his last game as a big leaguer on July 2nd. He did not play professional baseball after the 1986 season. His older brother Tony played 24 games with the 1984 Dodgers.
Mike did a great interview with Kansas City radio DJ Dave-O if you care to listen Mike Brewer - Clubhouse Conversation |

Poor Devil
These don't turn up all that often. This is the Brace image of Freddie Velazquez that was used for the Galasso set. And, unlike most Brace photos, this one is actually clear and bright. Velazquez was the third-string catcher for the expansion Pilots. He was nicknamed "Poor Devil" by Gary Bell and Jim Bouton because he was so excited to be in the major leagues, but almost never got to play. Most teams stopped carrying 3 catchers a few years later. 3 catchers gave a manager some versatility--you could pinch hit and play lefty-righty without worrying about having no one available in case of injury--but, mostly, the 3rd catcher would stay in the bullpen to warm up the relievers. Certainly, that was Freddie's fate with Seattle. Some teams went to the "emergency catcher"--a player whose natural position was elsewhere but, in a pinch, could do the job. For the bullpen, they went to using full time bullpen catchers who, for roster purposes, were considered part of the coaching staff.
This Brace image of Poor Devil was used for 3.5x5 postcards and I'm guessing the current autographed offering by tim328 on eBay is one of those 3.5x5s. It'll only set you back $50 (assuming no one else bids). Also attached is a clean scan of a 3.5x5 from my own collection (perhaps a tad over-saturated). EDIT: Just noticed that my 3.5x5 is a bit wider in perspective (can't see the anniversary patch at all in the eBay offering), which likely means the eBay offering is the 4x6 version.
