The Frank Talcott whom stlcardsfan posted with the Red Sox above was also a phantom major leaguer with both the Tigers and the Phillies in 1919. He had been a star hurler at Yale University. He never pitched in the minors, because he kept returning to a nicely-paying job in the chemical industry in New Jersey when his major league hopes didn't work out.

What do you mean phantom? is there a list of known "phantom" players. I assume its players who have been noted as played but no record of it.

By "phantom," I mean they were on major league teams during either the regular season and/or playoffs, but never played in a regular season (or playoffs) major league game. So they were not really major leaguers. Sometimes these players are known as members of the Bill Sharman Society, named after the Basketball HOFer who was with the Brooklyn Dodgers in September of 1951. Keith Olbermann coined that term.

There is a list of known such players on the SABR website in its Research Tools section under the Heading "Near Major Leaguers."

Other than most of us are mere Sandlot players of the beautiful past-time we called Baseball... but truly, that has to be the saddest phrase: "Near Major Leaguers" of the players that had never tasted the At Bats or Inning Pitch of being so close... thanks for the info, Cusick...

Clarence Steere a Red hopeful in 1920, apparently threw a fit and was sent home.

Leo Seiffert a Canadian ball star pitcher who was let go early, couldnt find why. He had pitched very well the year before.

John Barthold 1904

Piggybacking off what Dto7 has posted about Barthold, here he is extracted from the 1904 Philadelphia A's team photo. He was also given the Remini treatment.

Looking for photo of James E. Dallas

I'm going to piggy-back off of this discussion of phantom players to inquire about James E. Dallas (dallas001jam), not quite a phantom player. James Dallas got a tryout with the Philadelphia Quakers in the spring of 1887, and played in at least one game with the club in Savannah in late March before he was released. I was looking to see if he by any chance appeared in a team photo of the club prior to his release, and I came across this photo of the 1887 club:
http://www.19cbaseball.com/image-phi...lies-1887.html

One of the players in the back row is explicitly unidentified, and I'm pretty sure there aren't enough players identified to cover all the players in the photo. So does anyone know the history of this photo, and have all of the players been identified?

From what I've read is that Charlie Ferguson wasn't with the club until after Dallas was released. Ferguson was holding out for more money and didn't sign until April 4th.

stlcardsfan - Several of the Cincinnati Reds prospects you listed above turned out to be phantom major leaguers. Leo Seiffert did not leave the Reds before the 1921 season started, which was on April 13. He was reported to be with them on May 1 in St. Louis and scheduled to pitch for them in an exhibition game in Decatur, Illinois the next day. The Cincinnati Post of May 9 reported the Reds' dropping him because "his pitching elbow is out of whack. He probably will visit Bonesetter Reese early this week." Catcher Tom Conway lasted with the Reds until April 27, when he was released. Outfielder Paul "Biz" Dawson had been with the Reds the previous year. They had signed him off the campus of West Virginia University and he joined the Reds on July 30, 1920 in New York. Shortstop Bill Schirmer was with the Reds until April 26, when he was released to St. Paul of the American Association. Infielder Carl Schmehl also went to St. Paul, but on April 28.

stlcardsfan has already posted two photos of Leo Seiffert. If anyone wants photos of the others posted, let me know. My photo of Dawson shows him in a basketball uniform, but otherwise I have photos of these guys in baseball uniforms.

Interesting, could find very little mentioning Seiffert. Thanks for the info.

This photo shows Barrett with (or at least wearing the uniform of) the 1899 Western League Detroit Tigers.
