Yep - he actually opened the season as Cannizzaro's back-up. On April 17, without ever getting into a game, he was released. The Pads had just traded McBean to LA and received Leon Everitt and Tommy Dean in return, creating a need to drop someone. Gonder was expendable because a few days earlier the club had returned infielder Rafael Robles to Elmira and signed catcher Chris Krug.

Howdy Folks!

Could someone tell me the photo number for the vault photo that this custom card was made from. I could look it up and get it myself if someone could give me the photo id. I know that I had one but I can't find it now.

Thanks a million!

Not a TV pic. Was taken elsewhere on the web.

Skinny O'Neal 1925 UIN

O'Neal is presented in Phillies garb during Spring Training in 1925. He was pictured in the 3/15/1925 edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Roggenburk photoshop

That is a Red Sox image, adeptly photoshopped. Roggenburk was never in Spring Training with the Pilots

On the one hand, obviously you're right - he was purchased from Boston towards the end of June and then suddenly retired from baseball on July 31.

On the other, it's such a damn great photoshopping job - I held hope.

Sigh.....

...again, a HELL of a good job on the image.

I'm not sure about these two photos, Dto7. I looked up both the 3/5/20 New York Daily News and the 3/5/1921 Sacramento Bee. In both cases, the player photo was captioned "Sidney" Ross, and the player was noted as having been with the San Antonio team. Given what's in Baseball-Reference.com, that would be a career minor league pitcher named John Sidney Ross.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=ross--004joh

His Sporting News contract card calls him Sidney Ross:

https://digital.la84.org/digital/col.../102775/rec/15

The date of birth on his contract card is consistent with the DOB on the career minor leaguer's B-R.com record. The contract card says he was a left-handed pitcher. B-R.com doesn't have any info about which arm he used.

The major leaguer's name was George Sidney Ross. He was also a left-handed pitcher. His one game in the majors was with the NY Giants on 6/27/1918. The contract card for the career minor leaguer says the Giants acquired him in August of 1918. Quite a coincidence.

Maybe you know something about both these guys being the same player. I can't find any official source that unites them. I've checked the newsletters of SABR's biographical research committee for about the past three years, and there is no mention of a Ross in its updates.

The B-R.com record for the major leaguer George Ross is at:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=ross--001geo

I could not find a Sporting News contract card for him.

Cusick, thanks for the research on George Ross great information.

I went by this July 7, 1918, Butte Miner Sunday newspaper photo of a pitcher Ross that looked like the ones I posted. I thought this was George Ross that pitched for the Giants in 1918. I found the same image photo from June 22, 1918.

I'll take the two photos down on your information.

Thanks, Dto7

I found an article in the Houston Post just after Ross made his MLB debut with the Giants in June of 1918. That article also associated him with the San Antonio Bronchos. Given this and your newspaper articles above, I was increasingly coming to the belief that George Sidney Ross and John Sidney Ross were the same player, and that the B-R.com records of the two players should be merged. I consulted with a friend who is skilled at discerning these kinds of cases, and he agrees with that conclusion. So all these photos of Sidney Ross should be valid representations of the major leaguer.

Thanks, Cusick for all your help on Ross, and I will repost the photos. I also found the obit on John Sidney Ross from the 4-23-1935 Brooklyn Times Union.

Garry Roggenburk Card - Pilots

I don't recall where I found the image to make the card but it wasn't me who photoshopped it so well. There were however additional options available for the same image. Here is the entire image.

I did that Roggenburk

That was my Roggenburk Photoshop from my blog post from 2014.

https://bobscustomcards.blogspot.com...h?q=roggenburk

I didn't use it for a card because Merkle mentioned the spring training background back then

However I did make another Photoshop with the appropriate background, the Oakland Coliseum.

Walter Prince 1883

Facepack upgrade, featuring a much clearer image of him playing for the 1885 Haverhill team. The team photo was printed in the 9/5/1926 edition of the Brooklyn Times Union.

John Bass 1871 MISSING PLAYER

Bass, who was a starter for Cleveland in the inaugural year of the National Association, is pictured in an 1884 Brooklyn Stars team photo. The photo was printed in the 7/7/1912 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and also features several other major leaguers. Thanks are in order to Chickazoola in helping me match up the team photo to rosters printed in contemporary newspapers.

Thank you, cinemaodyssey and Chickazoola, for this photo of John Bass. Given the head and nose shapes seen in this photo, I think the photo of Bass posted by t_wil1 on August 25, 2019 is valid. It is on the following webpage:
