Untimely notifications

In my Oriental universe last night I encountered an odd problem. I was autoplaying through several days in succession in order to get to some scouting reports that were due. I was only advancing one day at a time, however. On the 25th of February I received notice that that there was a message for me. Checking my message board, I was informed that Spring Training was starting. I rushed to my pitching page to set up rotation, etc., and was puzzled to discover that five of my pitchers were fatigued. I finally decided that they must've been jet-lagged from the trip to Florida, shrugged and forgot about it until some hours later when I finally found where in the interface Spring Training was hiding.

When I got there, two things jumped out at me. First, that spring training had begun two days before I received notification, so I had two games played, and no wonder some of my pitchers were tired. It seems to me that a late notification isn't much better than no notice at all. I had no lineups set, had no chance to fill out my roster with minor leaguers, no rotation set.

The second problem is that the only thing the Spring Training page is the standings. The leaderboards and other stuff are all blank. I read in another thread recently that if you have statisticsset to minimum, this is a side effect. I set mine to minimum after reading horror stories on these boards about how much memory this game can consume. Also, I'm running on a machine that doesn't meet the minimum specifications for OOTP, so it runs very slowly, and I thought reducing the computations might speed it up. Is there any way for me to access the Spring Training stuff without monkeying with the level of statistics?

Curtis,

Was the message dated February 25th or before that?

It was dated the 23rd, and my manager news page has it arriving on the 23rd. It was on the personnel page that day, autoplaying until the 25th to get scouting reports, which came in that day. On the 25th I received a popup that said I had a personal message, and the screen automatically changed to the news page, where both my scouting reports and the Spring training announcement were waiting.

Is it possible that the popup refered only to the scouting reports and that the Spring Training announcement DID arrive on time, but I never would have known it arrived until some other personal message arrived to trigger the popup? If so, that seems like a bad design decision.

You hit the nail on the head there. Notification of Spring Training is not a personal message. That is why there is an Autoplay until spring training option so you can sim until that day and have the game stop. However, the game does not stop to notify you that it has started when you sim to another date. Same thing goes for the regular season. The game assumes that if you choose to pick another date to sim until, then you are aware of the date spring training and/or regular season occurs. So, this really is not a bug, but is working as intended. I would suggest posting this on the Wishlist for 2007 if you would like other events to stop the game from simming when you have personal message notification on. Thanks.

I think this is probably the case.

I'm not sure why/how you consider this bad design. If someone is simming ahead I wouldn't think they would normally want the simming to stop whenever a game is going to be played. I could understand a request for more options under the "stop simming if..." category for the beginning of spring training and/or the beginning of the regular season or something but these are typically days people would auto-sim to not past so I don't see any fault in it not being there at the moment.

*Edit* - And I had forgotten about the auto-sim to spring training option, so as I said, I don't think "bad design" is the case at all for this situation.

Definitely not a bug so I am moving this here and closing. As mentioned, if you want to add your comments to the suggestion and wishlist forum, please feel free to do so.
