Mac: pre-trade-deadline crash
I could easily have missed it, but I didn't see anything else in the forums that pertained to this specific problem: I'm running on a Mac G4 running OS X 10.4.11, 933 MHz, 1 gig memory. My fictional universe has about a 100-year history, currently with 20 teams in two subleagues, plus a full minor league system. Last night the simulation got up to early July, but it was running terribly slowly, so I stopped auto-play and quit OOTP, then ran Onyx.
Today I tried to continue, and OOTP crashed after about three more days. I restarted and reloaded. After a very long period of "finalizing," the game crashed again at around July 28. Restart, reload, "finalizing," crash on July 26. The next crash was also on the 26th. I turn off Norton Antivirus when I run OOTP, and each season I delete the following: messages messages.dat box scores coaches game logs history players reports teams temp The .dat file sizes are as follows: coaches.dat 19.3 MB ethnicities.dat 4 K faces.dat 748 K human_managers.dat 4 K names.dat 588 K nations2.dat 4 K offers.dat 2.9 MB options.dat 4 K parks.dat 256 K players.dat 38.6 MB retired.dat 161.4 MB scouting.dat 6.7 MB teams.dat 21.7 MB trades.dat 16 K weather.dat 44 K world.dat 16.7 MB Per the bug-reporting protocol: 1. Make sure you are running the latest patch version. The latest patch for OOTP 9 is Patch #3 and further details on this can be found in OOTP 9.1.2 Released! I've got the latest patch. 2. Check the Common Technical Problems Thread and the OOTP 9 FAQ Forum to see if your question has already been answered there. Nothing there that I saw. 3. Do a quick search of tech support to see if your problem has already been submitted. The time we spend chasing down bugs that have already been submitted is time better spent tracking down and resolving issues. Did that too. 1. What, specifically, were you doing when the problem occurred? Include the specific screen you were on when the problem occurred. Watching the simulation do its thing. I'm using the regular simulation page, not the simple one. 2. What happened? Was there an error message? If so, what was the specific message? No error message. OOTP just went "poof," and up came the desktop. Near as I can tell, no files were updated. 3. Were you able to repeat the error with this same game? With another game? If so, what steps did you take? Haven't tried it with another game, but I've managed to repeat the error -- while hoping to avoid it, mind you -- at least three times. Each time, I simply started auto-play from the saved date. 4. If relevant, what do you think the program should have done? Not crashed? 5. What is your league configuration (fictional/historical, etc.) Fictional league with two subleagues, each containing 10 teams in a single division. Each team has 10 minor league affiliates. I'm on year 104. 6. Are you a Mac or PC user? I sure am. (Sorry -- Mac; details below.) Additionally, if your problem is related to system performance, memory utilization, or the like, please include details about your computer's hardware and operating system. If your problem has to do with FaceGen, please include information about your video card. I have no idea whether FaceGen is a problem. I have it set to generate pix on demand, but even so, apparently I have "demanded" 2,170 player pictures. Activity Monitor shows that OOTP isn't using up that much memory. Some system details: Machine Name: Power Mac G4 Machine Model: PowerMac3,5 CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1) Number Of CPUs: 1 CPU Speed: 933 MHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 133 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.3.3f2 Hard drive: Capacity: 111.79 GB Model: ST3120022A Revision: 8.76 OS9 Drivers: Yes DIMMS: Size: 256, 256, 512 MB Type: SDRAM Speed: PC133-333 System Power Settings: AC Power: System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 180 Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10 Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 60 Sleep On Power Button: Yes Automatic Restart On Power Loss: No Wake On AC Change: No Wake On LAN: Yes Wake On Modem Ring: Yes If it's just a matter of abandoning this game and loading the latest backup, that's not really a problem -- I'd lose maybe five years, and I can live with that. Thanks for your help. |

So you have a 100 year history with only 1 GB of RAM? What kind of settings do you have enabled? Have you tried following some of the suggestions in this thread: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...auto-play.html |

Meanwhile: * I haven't priced RAM lately, but since I'm recently out of work, it's too expensive, sight unseen.... * Do you mean OOTP settings or Mac/OS X settings? * I did download the 9.1.5 patch -- haven't done so with 9.1.6, having just found out about it. All seems to be going fine. In fact, the simulation's running faster. Only done one season so far, though, so I don't know if the pre-trade-deadline crash will happen again. |

OOTP ones. If you've looked over that thread, I'm sure that we don't need to go over them in detail again here.
With that much history, you've just ended up with really large files. The longer you go, the slower it will go and the more likely it is to tax your system beyond its capabilities. There's no bug here, just a limitation. Is there anything else that we can help you with? |
