New game wierdness

So I started new game starting 1901. I was planning on taking over a team in the mid 20's. I am using Spritze 5 DB. Well I thought hell its 1920 why not now. I wanted to check how good things were going historically and Babe Ruth had retire, and there were many, many, many, mre good players that had retired.

How do I stop this from happening

I'm guessing you did not have recalc turned on. Am I right?

I had the same problem the first couple of times I started my league, until I figured out that I could adjust the "Talent Change Randomness" under the Player and Picture Options tab of the Game Setup. It defaults to 100, so if you don't have recalc turned on, your guys are basically guaranteed to follow ahistoric career paths.

I have recalc turned off, but randomness dialed down, so now I get a reasonable amount of accuracy with plenty of unexpected wrinkles.

But they have amazing ratings. I don't see how this could be the problem

Another possibility is that your injury settings are too high, and players are suffering career ending injuries.

Ratings can tank even faster than an economy can.

Try re-calc on (3yr)..... development off.......injuries minimum
