trouble dealing with rule change

In 2023 apparently, the MLB decides to reduce the active roster size from 25 to 24. I don't really want to go into commish mode, and change it back (feels like I'm cheating).

However, I tried going to an 11 man pitching staff, but my team's ERA soared. Probably the result of an earlier rule change that extended the season to 166 games (approximately 10 years earlier). I decided I have to go to a 12 man staff, but that means I need more utility players. A result being that I had to trade off one of my more popular players because he wasn't very useful defensively.

Since I'm not going to change the rules. I was wondering what everyone else would do?

i am more of a baseball purist...166games good lo0rd how many new teams?

i would keep the roster at 25 or even expand it to 28-30 no dh

and i use a 12 man staff all the time i usually use a spot starter 1-2 a month even if my reg starters r not tired. i wish i could use a six man rotation (i havent looked to see if that option is even there, i think it is)

but i did delete my orig 2000 league i have been working on custom league and 1871 history league.

1871 with a 12 man pitching staff? Wow. I'm in 1911 with a 7 man staff and think that is one too many.

My roster size has dropped from 25 to 24 to 23 and my season has gone from 154 to 156 to 158, but I've kept my roster composition pretty much the same. I stock up on guys with good fielding flexibility, allowing me to keep enough pitchers.

Meh, modern day major leaguers are wimps!

In 1933, at a time when the majors were playing 154 games over 173 days, the International League was playing 168 games over just 152 days, with an active roster limit of only 18 for most of the season.

At the rate things are going, we'll likely have 15-man pitching staffs by 2023. So, roster size needs to be expanded, not contracted.

There is an option for a six man rotation. At least there is on the pitching screen so I assume there is in league settings. I usually do not have much of a problem with 24 man rosters. My AAA and AA teams have this when I do modern fictional games. If there is no DH 24 man rosters and 12 man pitching staff should not be a problem. You have 8 starters 12 pitchers and 4 backups. 2 OF and 2 IF should be sufficient you just need a guy who can play 1B/3B or 1B/2B (my preference) and a guy who can play 2B/SS or 3B/SS. Sometimes you find a weird 1B/SS and 2B/3B but I find that unusual. Usually in OF I have 1 corner back up and one CF backup.

If you run a DH it gets a little tight. I try then to go with one OF backup and 2 IF backups unless I have a guy who can play all the IF well. Generally I find 1 OF will do all right.

No back up catcher?

You're probably correct if you believe you need to 12 pitchers to keep your ERA down. At this point, your the two major options I'd consider are:
  1. Go with 11 pitchers, 14 batters and set your team have a long Hook for starters and relievers. Considering this is the modern day setting, your ERA will probably go up. You might consider placing higher value on high-stamina pitchers. You might want to see if the rest of the league's ERA is going up. It doesn't really matter if your team ERA goes up 0.50 if everyone else in the league is going up 0.50 too.
  2. Go with 12 pitchers and 11 batters. You'd need to make sure that you put defensive versatility at the top - I imagine that the AI might not know to do this. You'd need a backup catcher that can also spot at the corner IF or OF positions - you can't afford to have a guy sitting on the bench with only one purpose, infielder capable of playing all four positions, outfielder that can play CF well. If you need a DH, that's going to be a little rough. Of course in a non-DH league, you're going to have the issue of pinch hitting for your pitchers.
Between the two, I'd probably opt for #1. How is the AI dealing with it? Are they running out 10-11 man staffs now?

One issue I have with going w/ 12 & 12, is that the AI likes to pinch hit for the pitchers. I once had 5 guys throw a shut out(15-0 none the less); the starter didn't even get the win, only went 3 innings. Each time the pitcher's spot came up, there was a PH.... I went into mgmt settings and set that one right, but still. There is always the prob of the backup catcher. I had one once upon a time who could play 1b, but he was tired of being a backup, and asked for some absurd amount in arbitration. Even though they ruled in my favor, I couldn't see paying that much for a guy who barely gets 200 AB.... In his old age, I've been seeing if Tony Sanchez can learn a new position. He's 35 now, and his defensive stats are waning. So, I'm gonna try him as the starting catcher/ backup 1b instead.
