Changing Historical team abbreviation

I read somewhere that changing the team's abbreviation from the one supplied in the game can foul things up. What effect does it have?

Haven't checked with 11 but I know in previous versions it would mess up if you
had any other abbreviations but AL and NL. For example you couldn't have FL for Federal League.

Another thing is, it used to be that if the team's historical abbreviation was changed, players would not go to their real life team that they started with. Not a big deal if you're holding a draft each season.

I'll be holding a draft each year, so I don't care about that. I just want to make sure there are no other problems.

my 1st historical league i had (on my 3rd now) i thought changed the historical id's back to what they were supposed to be after i changed them to my liking...

example lets say CLE Blues were CL1 i changed it to CLE by the next sn it was back to CL1 by the next sn. but i also didnt play enough of that league to give a clear answer if any problems occurred i played from 1871-1885 in that 1.

If you are letting the game handle expansion/team movement, your changes will disappear the next season (and so will your teams)

IF you are using a database other then the games (like Spritze's, Gambo's), you'd have to change the teams.csv and teamsfranchises.csv for each year to the new team names and delete the odb for that database. I've done it to keep teams from moving and to have the game add new teams automatically during a semi-fictional historical league play (making PCL and Negro leagues part of MLB). You have to add estimates for all the stats (duplicate existing teams entries and stats is easiest!)......and add it for each season you'd want the team to exist.

I don't think this would work with the games default database or if you use the odb.

Here are the teams added to the majors in my 1935 season in the teams.csv:

Did you mean pre-1901 cause there's a way around that. At least in 10 it worked.
I may have misread the original post as I see he said team abbreviations and not league
Abbreviations. My guess is that the teams franchise file needs to be changed to match the
new team abbreviations.

In my situation, I am starting in 1901 with 20 teams, not 16 as was IRL. So, I renamed some teams and added 4 new ones. I will handle future expansions manually. The next expansion won't happen until 1961. I am not changing the league abbreviations.

If you are handling expansions manually, then you shouldn't have a problem I would also assume that you are having a rookie draft also (i.e., not assigning rookies to their original teams). That is really the most important function of the historical team id.

Thanks...I will be having a rookie draft. I'm just trying to figure out how to manually import the players from the Negro Leagues, Japan and the old Pacific Coast League. It seems like the Gambo DB doesn't do it automatically. So I think I will use the Lahman DB and import the extra players from the Gambo...not sure if that makes sense??

Just copy the data for those players to the database your using and assign them to one of the teams. It won't matter since Your using a draft but I think they need to be assigned to a team in order to import correctly. You just need the batting, pitching, fielding, and OF fielding I believe.
