Arrow Do you play as GM only?

While I'm a huge sports fan, one area I have very little interest in is coaching.

However, I do have a ton of interest in the GM side of things (including the "business" side of it ex. finances), and even the broader picture (ex. economics of the sports industry).

For that reason, I still love OOTP, but normally play only as a GM and not the manager. Along with a few smaller reasons (for instance, the fact that you have a "manager" who you pay and can hire/fire, and yet you have all his responsibilities and are eligible for manager of the year).

Anywho, I'm just wondering how many people are like me in this regard, so I created a poll to see the proportion of people who act as gm only vs. people who handle everything.

There are a number of options:

1. Act as GM only, watch/sim every game, delegate setting lineups/rotation

This means you have enabled the "act as GM only" option (under manager options), delegated setting lineups/depth charts/rotation to your manager (under manager options), and you either sim or watch EVERY game (as in you hand off offense strategy, baserunning, pitching strategy, defense strategy, and substitutions to you manager, under game options)

2. Act as GM only, watch/sim games, set own lineups/rotation

"Act as GM only" enabled, watch or sim VAST MAJORITY of games, but you set your own lineups/rotation/depth.

3. Act as GM only, manage games, delegate lineups/rotation

"Act as GM only" enabled, you delegate setting lineups/rotation/depth to your manager, but you play out (manage) a significant number of games, as per your own definition of "significant", keeping in mind the spirit of this poll (ie. do you manage enough games throughout the season that you consider yourself to "manage games" or do you just manage once in a while, during the playoff race, or in the playoffs).

4. Full Control

You manage most games, and set your own lineups/rotation/depth, REGARDLESS of whether you have enabled the "act as GM only" option.

This is merely to satisfy my (and hopefully a few others') curiosity, but I really appreciate your participation!

Would also love to hear more about how you play/your opinion on playing as GM vs manager (or managing GM I suppose), etc below.

Thanks.

I mostly delegate my lineups/rotation all the way down the minors, but I will intervene if the AI does something really weird. I justify it at the MLB level as calling the manager in to the office and saying "Look, I know you want to do so-and-so, but I need you to do X. It's what we got him for."

In the minors, I mostly fiddle with the depth charts so everyone gets pretty good playing time, but I'll force-start prospects if I think it necessary.

How would I do that?

Right now as the Jays, my manager just will NOT let Jose Reyes bat leadoff..

I want to change that, but Gibbons just reverts it back when I do

Not that I think the goon would listen to his GM in real life anyway but..

Check your manager options. On the right, there's a set of options for who controls what. Should be one for lineups/rotation or something like that. Make sure it's not set to your manager, and if it is change it to yourself. You can still have him set an initial lineup (Actions>ask for lineup/depth chart), then you can tweak it. It'll stay that way until you ask him again.

Ah, I guess that would work.

I kinda wanted to leave that setting as is so the manager updates the lineup/rotation as he sees fit buy I may have to do what you do

Edit: I'm definitely going to have to take over setting lineups. He has Mark DeRosa as Utility 1 for every position other than C & CF, despite pretty good depth on the bench

I use Act as GM only, let the manager set the lineup/rotation and most of the minor demotion/promotions. I simulate regular season games.

During the season, I just work on trade, promotion/demotion for MLB level (and some major prospect) contract, scouting.

When the playoffs comes off, I manage every game, but I only handle substitution/bulpen.

I like it that way since every season takes not much time, but let you immerge in your league, knowing players.

Number 2 describes exactly how I play.

I pretty much do it exactly like catcherjul does.. sim most of the games, leave things in the hands of my managers, and hope that the AI is good when it comes to minor league transactions. It would take me years to play a whole season if I watched/managed every game, so I just watch games here and there. Now if my team makes the playoffs, its a bit of a different ball game

I act as GM only, and I sort of set line ups....I really don't though.
I go to the strategy screen and I set who is the starter for most positions, sometimes I will leave it blank and let the manager figure it out, but if I get a guy to start at a certain position, I want him playing that position. But I don't actually go and set the lineups myself.

Pretty much describes me perfectly, and I do the same at the minors with top prospects that I want to start, or that I want to learn a new position, etc. And the same with pitchers, if I got a guy I want to be a starter no matter what, I'll set it in the strategy, generally the relievers I let the AI setup however it wants.

Though, I'm going to start a league where I set my lineups and depth charts myself, and sim at a much slower rate than I do with my more "GM" ish leagues.

I play mostly GM only, but I do set my ML lineups. I'll manage a small amount of games per year usually, and I sim on a day to day basic and make sure to check all the box scores and stuff.

I like to have full control, with the only exception being that the AI sets minor league lineups. I don't trust the AI to lead me to victory.

I've been playing OOTP since v6.5. Most of the time, I've played out every game pitch-by-pitch. I've had a change of heart the past couple of years and now act as GM only.

I just started the Majors Quickstart and am really enjoying taking a broader view of things. I still watch every game, sometimes p-by-p, sometimes inning by inning because I like to keep close tabs on how the lads are doing.

I really enjoy imagining I'm sitting in the press box and seeing how coaching staff is handling things and how the team is developing on the field.

I really enjoy playing pitch-by-pitch but have come to the realization that I'll never come close to finishing a season.

Hope you're all enjoying OOTP14.

The latest version of the game is everything I've hoped for. I've loved games that strive to create an environment that let's us play out our dreams.

I can say that I've enjoyed every verson of this game that I've played.

I list myself differently as GM and as MGR. So if I win MOTY while yes it is me who still wins it it will show up differently in history. I let AI handle my minors.

I do #2 for my main team. Set lineups and depth charts and pitching staff, but then just sit back and watch the games happen.

But I also have an huge 40+ league universe, and I kind of use God mode for the rest of it. I'll tinker with the occasional player or team in the Sao Tome Baseball Conglomeration. I'll mess with the microscopic finances of the Greenland Winter Ice Baseball League. I'll rejigger the league totals in the Far North League. Or I'll make Matt Wieters have 80 ratings so he really turns into the Switch Hitting Jesus over in the Majors. But I won't do any divine influencing of my main Continental League, or rig trades/free agents that the CBL is involved in.

Me too.. I mostly sim, but always play out opening day, home opener, after a big trade and any post season games.

My manager has to be saying.. "So I get you to the playoffs each year and then you get us on the golf course shortly after."

I picked full control, but in truth there are a variety of ways I play. I used to always do full control.

For historical leagues, I tend to sim more but sometimes manage the first game of every series + the playoffs. My goal is to start a league in 1975 and play to the current year but I always fizzle out after a couple seasons.

For fictional leagues, which I am new to, I tend to manage more so I know the players better. Much harder to get to know the players just by simming. There are times when I do the same as above though - manage the first game of a series.

Another thing I mat try is to manage games once through the rotation and then sim the games once through the rotation. That may feel like it has a bit more continuity.

I have played a few different ways. Have a fictional player/really team universe where I played out all the games as well as GM'd. I just started a current MLB game where I might GM only, allow the manager to handle lineups and rotations.

I really want to try being the manager only, and try to just deal with the decisions the gm makes as far as trades, promotions, demotions etc. Anyone try that?
