Prospect list

How come when I look at the top prospects list, the first guy may have a 5 or 4 1/2 star potential, the second will have a 2 star, but the 3rd will have a 4 star? Why does the 3rd ranked prospect have more potential stars than the second?

Sounds like your Stars (Overall ability) is based on Positions not All Players. (That is the default I believe) So each prospect with regard to his stars is compared to other players at his position not all players combined.

You can change this in the Game menu/setup and options / global setup

the bottom left of the page there is a box that says "Overall based on all players not positions" that needs to be checked to have all players compared equally against each other and not compared to other players just at his position

Scouting. If you have scouts on (and not set to 100% accuracy), you're going to get variations in a player's apparent ratings/potential. The Top Prospects list, on the other hand, is unaffected by this fog of war - the players listed on it are, according to their internal ratings, the best prospects in the league, hands down. For this reason, I recommend staying far away from the Top Prospects list, unless you like having a crystal ball that can tell you who will assuredly be a star.
