Advantages to steam?

I'm just wondering why there is even the need for a steam key if you purchased it elsewhere. Is there something that steam adds that you don't get elsewhere? Why would anyone want a steam key as well?

Because the main draw of Steam is the ability to install/play your games on any computer with no licensing issues. I now save all my OOTP games to a flash drive that I keep with me, so if by some chance I don't have my laptop with me, or my hard drive fries, or I get a new computer, or whatever, I can simply install the game via Steam and have my league ready to go, wherever I am and whatever computer I'm on.

There's also the fact that if you already have a Steam account, it's nice to add the game to your library. With this addition, every game I play is now in my collection on Steam.

Oh, so would this also avoid those issues where when my computer crashes, I have to go through OOTP customer service to get it reset because I've already used a key on each of my computers? This has happened to me more than once.

Saving everything on a flash drive is a great idea, I never thought of that before.

Do it before you learn the hard way.

Most content available anywhere on the planet.

Deep discounts.

Excellent older titles that you may have missed don't lose shelf-space to Kill-em-up-Zombie Hunter XVI.

Always up-to-date patching.

Greenlight gives the small developer a fighting chance.

Easy hasslefree modding capabilities.

Huge audience--Great for multi-players (not so much me).

No traffic on the way to the store or on the way home.

No lines at the register, consequently, no attitudes.

Did I mention Deep discounts?

I used to like to trade games because it saved me a buck. But the chump change I used to save is nothing compared to what I save now.

Gaming, for me, has never been better.

FWIW...I hated Steam and everything about in the beginning. I gave it shot because I couldn't find Pride of Nations in any store. I wanted that game so badly I gave in. I got it for $9.99. You'll never see me rifling through the bargain bin at Best Buy ever again. I have not had a single problem with customer service or content. I have never had it crash. It is never down. Honestly, I do not know why I waited so long.

Actually I do. I was being stubborn about principle. Dumb. I was cutting off my nose to spite my face.

greenlight games are quite interesting. the premise of most of them are so unique and the ideas are great...problem is that many take forever to come to release if at all. For each one that's released it feels like the others just drag in on and on in alpha to get as much money as they can, then when it's released to bad reviews they already made some good money. There are certainly some great ones like banished and others as well but can't help but think if a larger dev took them over what better game we'd have...but of course they're too focused on COD clones and nice graphics. The list of interesting ones are quite large and 2014 will tell us if it's good for gaming.

Steam will keep track of the amount of hours you waste away on ootp...

Oh...almost forgot my disclaimer:

To each his own. Since I left the darkside and have seen the light I won't be convinced by the faulty logic that I used to use.

Barring any rebuttal from rutri01, in which I would be interested, HP wins the debate by a landslide.

You and I may actually be doppelgangers, HP, because this describes my experience exactly.* I will STILL prefer to own OOTPB outright but my abhorrence of Steam has completely dissipated.

*Except for me, it was Civilization V. Man, was I bitter over that in the beginning. Now it seems like a no-brainer. Still, we are all counting on the continued viability of Steam. Let's hope so.

LOL. CIV V is what started my hatred--before that I hadn't even heard of Steam.

You definitely nailed the list of benefits, above.

For those who are playing OOTP via Steam now, are there any advantages (beyond the "install on any computer" thing, which I love) to it that buying it direct lacks?

Similarly, if you are on it via steam, does that limit online league play (something I want to try when I go to 15 the first time it's on sale, since it looks like there are no 13 leagues left that aren't upgrading immediately to 15) or the ability to use the add-ons or mods?

1. If we exclude all of the other things that I listed above the only advantage would be if you changed operating systems or had to restore and you forgot or couldn't unlicense your game. With Steam you don't have to worry about license keys.

2. There is no difference in online play. With online league you download the database then upload it after you make your changes for the neext sim. Nothing differen there.

3. The only difference with mods is where you put them.

Yeah, there's really no distinct advantages to having OOTP on Steam, besides being able to re-install with no hassle. In the future, we might have Workshop content, but right now it's best suited to a backup method.
