Strange All-Star Nod
Just doing a modern day MLB watcher game, and I sim to when the All Star rosters are announced and I see this. Now, while I LOVE the game of baseball, I will admit I'm not much into the numbers and advanced stats and things like that. Can anyone tell me why he was selected to the All-Star game. I feel like he shouldn't have got the nod just based on his horrible W-L record

Just not getting enough run support looking at his stats.
Just glancing at his stats, he sports a nice ERA and his WAR is good but his team just sucks. |

While, that is true, he still would not make it on to many real-life all-star teams. Certainly there is a candidate with a prettier stat line....

I love the stats but the issue he has is no run support or defense. He would be a player I would want on my team. Would check his popularity status and perhaps that's what helped propel him on to the all-star ticket????

The ERA isn't great and the win-loss is terrible (although that's almost certainly due to lack of run support, as per SirMJ -- nothing Stro can do about that), but the peripheral stats are excellent: I think that's roughly a ~2.50 FIP! These All-Star voters must be more sabermetrically-inclined than the real world.

Has extremely good underlying numbers. 6+ WAR for a season is elite.

Isn't there a rule - I'm pretty sure that there used to be - that every team has to get at least one All Star? Maybe Stroman was Toronto's only plausible candidate.

All-Star selections have been tweaked. Guys can get injured for the entire year and still get voted in, which is realistic and I love it. Kershaw tore his labrum for me in late April and he easily got in the All-Star game with 2nd most votes out of any player.

@GAI. I have a similar thing going on with one of my players (1B) and he is out for 3 months. NOT 100% entirely sure if he will be active by the time all-star game arrives but it would be close. He is in 2nd place with strong showing. I did see his popularity standings which is high both for nationwide and locally. I think that's what makes it an interesting voting year.

I think the game defaults to having popularity count a lot towards all-star voting. I like to lower that setting but guess that's a personal choice.

Funny story is, the next season the Jays got some offense, and Stroman goes 17-6, with an era below 3 and wins the AL Cy Young.
I love this game |

It's due to his well known national popularity that he got in if you didn't mess with the default setting for AS voting.
