Another rainout oddity

Just had a Saturday game rained out and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Sunday. Go to play the first game on Sunday and it gets rained out. The second game is still on though. Wonder if that's ever happened in real life?

I would guess so, but technically it would be the second game that got rained out, I would think.....

Several years back, I went to what was supposed to be a Yankees vs. Rays single admission double header, this was when Piniella was still managing the Rays. As I recall it, the double header was single admission because the first game had been rescheduled because there was a hurricane at that time and the Rays were unable to get out of Tampa.

On the day of the double-header, they had further issues getting out of Tampa, and the first game ended up being cancelled, while the second was played. No one knew about this beforehand, though, so you had all of the fans there for the start of the first game. The Yankees (in a shocking display of corporate decency) provided unlimited free hot dogs and soda to fans until the second game began, and also allowed re-admittance. I think they tried to charge the Rays for the money lost on the free food, but I'm not sure what ever came of that.

Just looked back at the details.

That depends on whether it is a regular (single admission, two-for-one) doubleheader or a split (separate admission, usually day-night) doubleheader.

In real-life, by rule for regular doubleheaders the second game is always considered the makeup game. So if only one game of a regular doubleheader gets played, that's counted as a regularly scheduled game played and a makeup game which was postponed. For split doubleheaders, it depends on whether the game that was postponed was the normally scheduled game for that date or the makeup game.

Interesting comments in this thread. The oddity I have noticed is that sometimes my team will have a home game and an away game against the same team in one day.

And then Steinbrenner tried to petition MLB for a forfeit. Those were the days.

Had the Yankees "finished" tied in the win column with the Red Sox, they would have to play a makeup game against the Devil Rays. If they won they would win the East and the #1 seed, if they lost they would be the wild card and have to travel to the West Coast.
