Team focus

How do you change your team focus in the front office section? or are you not able to?

This is given from on high in this version. If your owner says you're rebuilding, you better either rebuild or win enough to convince him enough a rebuild isn't necessary.

Does this make sense to you? My owner goal is to win the championship this year and yet my team focus is neutral. Shouldn't it have changed to "win now"?

Another example in my league is Atlanta. They have been under .500 7/9 years, missing the playoffs all 9 years. Two of their owner goals are play close to .500 and build the team for the long term. Yet their team focus is win now.

There are a lot of teams that would call themselves neutral and still intend to win a championship. This would be a team that has a high payroll with multiple all-stars but no large commitments to declining veterans. They should also have a healthy farm system.

A win-now mentality would be a team that trades away prospects to take on other teams' bad longterm contracts. They might contend immediately but two or three years down the road have a bloated payroll full of old players.

The GM has access to team focus, though. Maybe he thinks he needs to save his job, so he's going to try to win now.

As far as your own team focus, I don't think the CPU will ever alter it for you without you being in Do Not Disturb with control delegated.

Can this be changed by the commissioner?
If so, how?

Go to the team page of the team you want to change & click edit finances & then locate the team focus dropdown box

Not sure this is true. According to Matt, it's the owner who is setting team focus, not the GM. So if my owner is telling me to win the championship this year, shouldn't my team focus match? Especially since none of my other owner goals are related to building a farm system, getting drafted players on the roster, etc...

I suppose it is possible they altered it in this version, but I have never had the CPU change the focus on any team I have controlled.

I think that's correct. I know in the past I controlled it. And I don't think in my 10 league years so far in OOTP 16 that it has ever changed. I do know that I can go into commish mode and change it.

In past versions, I thought that how I set it would affect the types of trade offers I would receive from the CPU.

I'm on the road (wife driving, I hate texting drivers) so I will check this as soon as I get home so I can discuss from a point of more knowledge. I haven't messed with it in 16 yet. Be home in a few minutes.

As a GM I cannot control it.
I like the theory in solo play. In online play I do not like the implementation. We have been able to change Team Focus as GMs in prior versions.

This is kind of my thoughts as well. We have most of the owner features turned off in the OTBA but we have to have the commish manually fiddle with the team focus where before we could set it ourselves. Anything that makes the commish do extra work is not good.

For solo play, I do like it. It gives you a good idea of the current state of the team as viewed by the owner.

Agree in theory but it doesn't seem to be working properly.

If this is the case it is definitely different in 2016. Every other version you have been able to change this setting.

What does win enough mean? Multiple seasons or current season? I've had AI teams win 90+ games while listed as rebuilding, some of those teams even traded key vets for prospects while chasing the pennant. Not that its unrealistic for a team to do so, just wondering if owner personality is in effect here.

I guess seeing that this has been totally revamped for 2016, with control being taken out of the player's hands, I'll make a post in the Suggestions for Future Versions forum...

We need to be able to have a multiple choice conversation, at least, with the owner. I hate to bring in the other game, but conversations similar to the job interview conversations in Football Manager would be really awesome now that this has been changed.

Being able to tell the owner that I think we should play to Win Now, or trying to tell him we don't have the gas in the tank to win and need to start the rebuild, are things I think we need to be able to do here.

I know when you were still allowed to change it, I roleplayed it in my mind (or in dynasty reports) that I would have a sit-down with my owner and explain what I thought the organization needed to do.

We still at least have the ability to change it with commissioner mode, but I think this would add some functionality that would be great for us "immersion-geeks" as well. I'll make sure to add it to the wishlist post I'm planning.

Totally agree. I would hope this could extend over into owner goals so that I could respond when my "penny-pinching" owner wants me to extend an above avg, 34yr old SP who wants $100M contract.

Yes, that would be very useful.

Don't get me wrong, though... I'm starting my main league today, and while this is different, in a way it will freshen things up for me. Now, if I have a stupid and unrealistic owner, it does open up some different types of challenges. We might not be anywhere near winning, but my owner could act like Jeffrey Loria, for instance.

The conversation system is the one thing I've loved in FM that I would be in heaven if it got added into OOTP. Especially since it would open up dealings not only with players, scouts, trainers, etc -- but it would also open up dealings with the media, press conferences, etc.

Obviously, its ambitious, and these kinds of options would have to be able to be turned off for those people who wants "strictly baseball" -- but as far as a modern GM sim, it would be fantastic. They already make great strides in every version so giving the devs something like this to consider might not be too farfetched.

Dead on. This is what I have been waiting for. A more dynamic experience vs static. And I think trainers and how the game handles injuries is an area ripe for improvement.

Currently, my team trainer/doctor is fairly insignificant. I have no communication with him at all other than when it's time to renew his contract. I would love to see injures begin with a conversation/update from the team trainer instead of the static process now of either immediately knowing everything about the injury or having to wait up to 4 days with no clue what is going on. Let's have a more realistic fog of war experience with injuries that matches up closer to reality. Daily updates from the trainer/doc with a status update on every injuries player. (more info on guys who are closer to returning, less on guys months away) How's the player feeling? Is the ankle still swollen? Report back from surgeon evaluation, player isn't limping anymore, etc...
