Evaluating Players Based On Stats Only

quick question for the more experienced stats only players. I am attempting to play stats only MLB league with an expansion team. I confess I do have "Other Ratings" turned on so I can have a better idea of player speed and defense.

That said, how do you evaluate, or maybe more appropriately, how often do you evaluate your player in the minors to decide whether or not they are ready for the next level, or if the are starting to suffer from being held back?

Seems to me it could be a crap shoot if a player is on a hot streak, or maybe starts to languish a bit but didn't notice.

Any insight is appreciated.

Hi, it is nice to see more and more Stats Only players.

First, turning on "Other Ratings" is perfectly fine especially if you are not yet adept in assessing fielding stats.

Having said that, for just the basics one look assessment:

Batters in general: OPS (minimum 0.750)
SS & CF- needs to have good defensive stats

Pitchers in general: FIP (must be below 3.5)
Starting Pitchers: Stamina above 60 (if "Other Ratings" is turned on) and they MUST have at least FOUR types of pitches

There are a lot more stats that can be considered but that for me the basic.

Let me know if you have other questions.

2B and C should also have good defensive stats.

This process gets easier the longer you do it. Starting out it seems like it's hopeless, but it isn't. You will learn to differentiate prospects from suspects. It just takes time.

Stats only is a crutch work around for a too easy aspect of the game. What baseball person only looks at a player's stats? In baseball, you can see a person's swing, work ethic, glove work, foot work, etc.

In real life, the general manager has to work with a player's stats and with his scouting reports, which is just what we work with in stats only. What the GM does not get in real life is a magical set of present and future ratings on which he can base his decisions. Stats only makes for a more realistic simulation, but it's not for everyone, and if you prefer the vanilla version of the game that's just fine. Some of us don't.
