When will regular sports games reach OOTP's level of depth?

I just played MLB The Show for the first time in a while, and I realized how much I missed actually playing games with the team I built, but at the same time I was disappointed with the lack of depth in its franchise mode, especially when compared to OOTP. There's nothing I'd like to see more than a game that combines The Show's gameplay with OOTP's complexity, level of detail and immersion - and i would like to believe that it's just a matter of when, not if, a game like that will be made. What do you guys think? Will it be 10 years? 20 years? Never?

For right now im ok with them being two different games. Im ok with MLB The Show caring about graphics and realism and gameplay and adding what else they can into Franchise as far as waivers and all. They do follow the rules too. I love OOTP and its a SIMULATION. If you could combine the two itd be fun.. but if you play on EASY... like you can on the Show you wouldnt get realistic stats.. thats why I buy both and play both.. LOVE BOTH!

Honestly? Won't happen, in my opinion. The mass market has no need for the level of flexibility and configurability Markus has built. It's simply not good business for EA to sink the amount of resources it would require into building an OOTP like engine. It's not going to result in any appreciable change in sales for them given their target audience, IMHO.

Yeah that's a good point - it's all about the "Ultimate Team"-type modes these days because that's where the money's at. That being said, I'm hoping that one day technology will make integration of the two types of games easy enough to be worth it....like maybe EA or Sony or 2K buys out OOTP and just sticks it right into one of their games.

And those games are designed for "fun". They want you to be able to take say the Phillies of this year and have a shot. Having features like OOTP in a game like that would make the game too hard for the gamers out there.

What if Marcus bought The Show and plumped it into OOTP.

I think Marcus would kick back relax, hire some more coders and make OOTP perfect if he had that kind of money to buy The Show.

OOTP and games like The Show really are apples and oranges. They are both fruit but the similarity ends there. Because of it's big graphics and "in-game" realism it will always be more attractive to the casual gamer and fan. OOTP appeals to more of a niche crowd. Although that niche gets bigger every year. Most of the gamers EA appeals to don't know what OPS, FIP, WAR, wOBA mean. Or if they do it never occurs to them to consider them in trades. OOTP players do though!

Just a thought on this, I don't know if anyone remember NHL simulator from the 90s, it was a OOTP like hockey sim however it had the ability for you to transfer the data (rosters etc) into a program called ice hockey where you could play the game, then transfer the details of said game back into the simulator for accurate record keeping. Imagine a deal like that between OOTP and the Show....

That would be perfect! It would make everyone happy because it's an additional option that people could choose to ignore if they prefer! The problem is it wouldnt be enough of a moneymaker for the big sports game companies to do it.

Of course. The sooner we get version 1, though, the sooner we can get to version 2. (I know the gentleman they hired had medical problems.)
