Trying Something New...for me
I just started letting the AI manage the games. For the most part I am letting the manager set the line-ups too with only the occasional interference.
I'm still watching in pitch-by-pitch mode but I wanted to step back and approach the game from more of a GM role instead of God-mode. So far, it's been fun. Does anyone have any experience playing this way? If so, do you find that you are still engaged at the game-level? Do you find it hard to not bring in the bullpen when you see the pitcher is tired in a close game?

I'm a control freak. If I pull stupid **** and blow a game, that's one thing, but if The Machine does it ......
Nah, I can't. I gotta maintain control over lineup, who pinch-hits when, and I am personally combing all my players so they look good while getting soaked 9-2 every day. I need that.

Been playing this way before GM mode was put in. I watch pretty more ever game and things get intense.

This is the only way I play and agree that things get very intense. I take over selectively once September comes along and during playoffs, ust so I guarantee my call ups get the action that I want them to get. Otherwise I just enjoy (or not enjoy!) the game.

This is very interesting to me. I'm not sure I would have the discipline to stay hands off.
Does anyone find it hard to stay engaged during the games themselves? Do you start feeling like Brad Pitt from Moneyball?

I'm about 30 games into my season and I find that I still control starting line-ups at the beginning of the game screen to some degree. The AI keeps putting my clean-up hitter who happens to be a gold glove third baseman at DH and my other power hitter who is a mediocre fielder at 3B. I switch them every game.
Aside from that I have pretty much let my manager do as he sees fit. Since I relinquished most of the control to managing the game to the AI my team has rebounded from a terrible last place 3-7 start to take over 1st place at 15-9. To my surprise I enjoy being a spectator. Come playoff time or if it's close down the stretch I will resume control.

This is exactly how I play in GM Only. I enjoy playing out the games by just watching them, and I don't want to miss any moments by skipping over games. IE Player A's first career HR, Player B's 100th HR, Player C throwing a no hitter etc.
I ask manager once a week to set all the lineup/depth charts then I tweak maybe 1 or 2 things about them that I prefer and that's it, manager has control of all strategy and makes all in-game decisions while I watch. I also enjoy shouting at what an idiot my manager is when he makes decisions I disagree with during the game, but that's all apart of the fun I think ![]() Plus, if the team is playing like crap then I actually have a legitimate reason to sack the manager as he's the one that's been making all the coaching decisions. |

Although I set the lineups, I let the AI do most of the in-game managing. Once in a while I'll put in a pinch hitter when I think it's necessary, but then I immediately let the AI take over control again. Can't say I have too many complaints over the way the AI does its job.

Yeah, this is pretty much how I've always played, too. I set lineups and depth charts, tweak line-ups as necessary on the opening game screen, and then just sit back and watch it play out in real-time sim mode.
I won the championship for the first time last season and my manager was awarded Manager of the Year, so now all of a sudden he thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread and won't let me change many of the strategy settings, but thankfully still lets me meddle with lineups and depth charts.

I always fly in GM mode.
Sometimes I'm left scratching my head when the manager does something silly. But I guess we all do that IRL when the manager of the team you root for does a bonehead thing. |

That's what's so cool this year.. my manager let's me do whatever I want.. so I take care of the rotation and let him do the lineups/depth charts and when I do play a game (I mostly sim) I choose the substitutions and let him do the rest.
Amazing job with v16! |

I guess I play Brad Pitt-style.
I set line-ups, depth charts, rotation and bullpen roles and let the computer do its thing by simming one day at a time. I'll check the box score, my farm box scores (not even every day on those) and run the organization. Pure GM mode. I don't even know how to pinch-hit, replace my pitcher or even watch a game. That's been my approach with management sims since I had the first version of Baseball M*. If I want a play-by-play experience, I'll play Strat.

Pure GM-Mode for me. I give the manager the players and he makes it happen on the field. Entering my 5th season with the Phillies 2020, and finally above .500 and in first place a quarter into the season. I've had to replace almost the entire front office and roster, but its been worth it. JP Crawford...what a player.
