For the love of God..........

Can someone explain why Madison Bumgarner is having such a struggle in this game, please!

He went 7-6 with a 2.98 ERA in Year 1, Year 2 he's 5-5, with a 2.71 ERA with 118 Ks in 109.2 IP. Not to mention he's already hitting .258 with 2 HRs in Year 2.

Here's his stats for the season (Year 1):

In 12 starts, hes:

1-6
4.86 ERA
OAVG .286

Those stats above are a microcosm of his season so far, VERY unrealistic with his ratings. He's had one shutout against a Braves team that isn't real good at this point.

I believe he's had ONE game that he went deep pitch/inning-wise, and has given up at least 4 runs or more every start.

That's NOT Madison Bumgarner what-so-ever.

I hear you, those are the numbers I would expect from him, this season seems to be an aberration, I hope.

So, requisite post here of "small sample size." This is hardly enough reason to say that he sucks in this game. He's having a rough start to the season, clearly, but what about some of the other stats?

What are his BABIP and FIP? Either of those could help indicate whether he is suffering from bad luck or bad fielding behind him. I did a quick sim of MLB through June and he is 5-7 with a 4.30 ERA. However, he has a 3.47 FIP, which indicates that poor fielding behind him is costing him almost a run a game. That FIP seems pretty close to in line with how he performed the previous three seasons.

Other than that, I would say you should just play out the string and hope he turns it around.

Replay the same season 1,000 times then report back your findings.

I'm too lazy to check the exact numbers, but Clayton Kershaw had a pretty rough (by his standards) start to the 'real life' season this year.

Basically... it happens.

I appreciate your constructive response!

This is exactly what I was going to respond with. Clayton Kershaw was 3-3 with an ERA of just under 4 in his first 10 games this year and is already back down to a 2 ERA 15 starts later. It's very premature for you to have said he "sucks in this game" in just over 1/3 of a season, especially without looking at this peripheral stats. A big key I've noticed to having good pitching is improving defense up the middle. Find high range guys at the shortstop, centerfield and catcher positions (and to a lesser extend 2B) and your ERA vs. FIP should be much closer, if not actually getting to a FIP higher than your ERA

This is Oscar Tellez in my fictional PBA. If he was a real life player he would beat-up Madison Bumgarner in elementary school and take his lunch money. Then in High School he would sleep with Bumgarner's prom date.

Look at that 1963 start. Am I panicking? Am I about to trade him away?

Nope. He'll turn it around. He'll be alright. Then he'll beat-up Bumgarner's agent...for fun.

Okay, so i'm going to assume you're a smart ass, and that's okay. I'm not panicking, and i'm not consider trading either.

When I look at the rest of my starters, it's a bit confusing, but yeah, I get it, and I never lost touch with "reality".

Thanks for the "comparison".

I'll agree to disagree.............as you say, everyone has helped me, and i've been respectful in my posts since I joined, and have sent quite a few "thanks" to members.

Honorable_Pawn's response was non-constructive, and quite frankly obtuse.
