Dealing with guys that won't retire

I had an outfielder on my team, 43 years old, extremely popular with the local fans. He played in about 5 out of 60 games with a .000 average. I released him after he refused a minor league assignment because I needed to open up a spot on the 40 man for somebody that actually has a future. Then I get a message that fans are shocked I got rid of him and the fan interest crashed. Really? Isn't there a way to add him to the coaching staff or something?

I usually stick them in the minors then they will see they done by end of year or at the turn of the year they would hang up them cleats. Or simply trade him

How much did fan interest actually fall? In my experience it may be a few points and it will go back to normal after a week. If you are in the offseason ignore them for most issues.

Not sure how much, it's just weird a past star who has contributed nothing the last few years and makes a ton of money has that much influence over fan interest. That's why I think it would be cool to have an option to turn somebody into a coach or manager. Or if that's already an option I haven't found it yet.

If you go into Commish mode you can do this.

I think you can force him to retire and then change to a manger or coach. You have to be in commissioner mode to do so.
The refusal to accept a demotion can be a pain.

Yep use commish mode to retire him. Think of it as ou telling him either he retires with dignity or he gets cut. I think a lot of stars will take retirement

Not me. If I'm that star I'm getting paid every penny.

if it's a team hero type that's likely to get a number retired I'll hang on to them "out of respect." Or if it's a guy that's within reaching distance of milestone I'll probably let them try to get it. However, if its a guy I just picked up hoping to catch lightening I a bottle they'll get released without hesitation.

I'm much more ruthless after July if the playoffs are hanging in the balance and I think the player in question will prevent me from succeeded in that quest.

My attitude as far as fan interest is concerned is "they'll get over it". I figure I'll gain the fans back by having a competitive team. Fan interest will decline anyway if I keep guys for sentimental reasons and the team stinks as result.
