Should I use coaches?
I'm starting a new stats only fictional league for OOTP 17. In my previous fictional league I had coaches and scouts turned off because I didn't think they brought much to the game and also felt it gave me an advantage because I could usually hire the best coaches.
With recent updates in the past couple versions of OOTP in respects to coaches, I'm debating if this part of the game is worth using now. So, looking for advice. Do you guys use coaches in your fictional leagues? If I didn't like coaches in OOTP14, should I consider turning them on in 17? |

Good question. I recently started using coaches again with OOTP17, after not using them for a good seven years of league-time. So far, I'm not sure what to make of it. I have a small market team so I can't really afford to spend too much on coaches and I generally just try to sign average guys so as to minimize my advantage. But I do looks for guys who buy into my organization philosophy.
Since I use stats-only, I do use scouts. Again, I have an average scout, but I do find it helpful and I don't sense it's giving me too much of an advantage. So, I recommend scouts and I'd be interested to hear what others say about coaches. |

I enjoy playing with coaches for the role-playing side of it. I probably spend more time deciding whether or not to promote from within or to hire new blood at upper levels than a sane person should. Whatever effect(s) better coaching has is rather subtle and difficult to gauge with the information available in OOTP. I think they are totally worth using if you enjoy the role playing side. If you are worried that you might lose something by having no coaches, as of OOTP 16 you can assign the assistant GM the role of hiring and firing coaching staff, so you can just focus on what if any positions you actually care about. The AI will fire staff based on their team's record, making it dangerous to try to stash a highly rated coach with the intention of later promotion.

Maybe I will give it a try using the assistant GM to manage the hiring/firing of the coaches. I guess worst case is I don't like it and just turn them off again.

I've never used them. I don't want that much depth to my game. Glad the option to have them is there but that it's just that - an option.
