For those who run MLB franchises
Do you take over your favorite or hometown team to build it how you like and get the players you want on your team? Or do you challenge yourself with taking a team you know less about in another division or league?
I have thought about taking a team outside of my Royals because I know the Royals and a lot of people get a game and immediately want to "take over" their team. But the way the Royals are being run on my computer makes me rethink that. |

I did that last year with v16, took over Cleveland instead of St. Louis and have been enjoying it so much, I imported it into v17 and have kept playing.
I still haven't been to a World Series yet, into my 8th season as GM. I only know maybe a few players on St. Louis now.. so one of these days I just might take a GM job if they offer. |

I've always in the past have taken the Brewers, but after I accomplish what I want to do with Milwaukee, I will be going with Colorado next.

I have done both and I always start at least one new save with every new version with the Cardinals.
One thing I have tried and just can't get into is an America League team. The DH makes the game seem like I have less decisions and I get bored. This year I'm struggling with the Marlins as I'm testing out Stanton. Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk

I always play one out with Detroit, but like most games when I play with my favorite team I have a hard time getting rid of the BIAS i have for certain players they have and I dont want to let them go ha. Like on OOTP or MLB the Show if I play as Detroit I wont want to let Verlander go or JD Martinez(JV because his contract is crazy high for what he is now and JD because he always asks for alot!). So I try to find a cool storyline or use one of the many different teams I watch on MLB.tv if the Tigers arent on (Rangers, Diamondbacks, Braves, Rockies). I started one with the Rangers and watched Nomar Mazara, Rougned Odor, Jurickson Profar, Joey Gallo, and Lewis Brinson turn into beasts. We won 3 Straight Championships and saddly when they all hit 6 years I had to decide who to keep. (I only kept Mazara and Odor because I signed Jose Fernandez and a Cuban Int FA that hit me 53 HRs. I was sad because I couldnt get Beltre to 500 HR ( I tried...he got to 480). But as you can see I feel you can get more immersed if you use a team that isnt your fav..but that might only be for me because I tend to try to keep most of the Tigers

I have a few. A career GM, a career manager who both started this year with whatever was the best A team that made an offer, a career something (I forget) that started last year and is in AAA now and a current year's MLB GM in Houston to see if I can fix the disaster. I happen to live in Houston at the moment, but, they are not my favorite team as they don't qualify for that anymore since they have gone to the American League (I hate the DH especially for managing or watching since it gets boring). Back when there was no DH I loved the Orioles because I lived in Baltimore one year in 4th grade and a classmate was nephew to Boog Powell who got tickets for our class to go to all the home World Series games... my first exposure to baseball. Later I was stationed in the San Diego area and went to Padres games a lot so loved them. Now, I have not had a favorite in awhile. I'll have to think about that. Nobody in the American League although I do root for the Orioles to finish ahead of the Yankees and I have season tickets (a medium package) to the Astros. In 16 I had a Dodgers team instead of Astros and mostly liked that.

try it and find out. the worst that can happen is a small amount of time spent... the moment you derive no joy try something else.
i've been playing career sports simulations since i was just a kid. i even used to maintain statistics for the games that didn't keep stats year-to-year - just pen and paper back then. i've played mostly hometown teams, but have also played others quite a bit, too. if i'm not well over 1000 years counting all sports, i'd be surprised. some things have gotten old, while other things i still enjoy. what you enjoy now may be completely different in "X" years -- i can attest to that with certainty. i've progressed to the point that all i care about is consistent success... i enjoy the jigsaw puzzle of managing resources over time... the biggest downfall of RL baseball GMs is their lack of respect for the future. Green Bay is an excellent example of doing things the right way. e.g. i am sick of re-building... this will happen if you regularly play the Detroit Lions, or similar perpetually terrible sports franchises. ![]() |

i can never do a save with my favorite teams in any sports game. I never want to get rid of the existing players because I just love them all lol. I never use the Yankees because I don't want to accept the fact that the roster needs to be shaken up

I decided a couple days ago to play a major league season out for the first time as manager of a team. I chose the 2016 Cubs, not because I am a frontrunner (I've been a season ticket holder going on eighteen seasons), but because I want to see what I can do with this team as manager.
I am also using this opportunity to submit bug reports where I see them. |

I tend to go with my favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, but I also like to manage and GM bad teams and turn them around. The Atlanta Braves this year are intriguing. They remind me of the Houston Astros from a few years ago.

Good Idea
Thanks for that idea. I might make a small variation of that. Sim the first season and choose a team to be GM of and take another team that fired their Manager. Start the year over again playing as the GM and Manager of the two teams I end up with.

I like to play as any team that I feel is in need of a rebuild but hasn't yet started to rebuild.

They have this for new MLB stadiums, but it's selectively enforced at the discretion of the commissioner. And, of course, old ballparks are grandfathered in.
