How Do You Start The 2016 MLB Season?
This is what I do:
I begin by changing the names of the awards to match their real-life counterparts which means that the "Platinum Stick" Award has to go. Platinum Stick sounds like the name of a bad underarm deodorant to me.
Next I correct some of the divisions and teams in the minor leagues that have incorrect division names and teams in the wrong division. Then I go to the list of managers, coaches and GMs and move people like Kim Ng and Thad Levine from bench coach to GM. I also try to be accurate about little details like facial hair which means that Ron Gardenhire is going to have a goatee and Kirk Gibson sports a five o'clock shadow. I know this might sound silly to some, but it's what I do. They say to play the game your way, well, this is how I play it.
After that I go to the list of free agents and I usually go through the list of players who are demanding $ and match them up with their real-life counterparts. I find out who signed with a team in real-life and while in "Commissioner Mode" I'll assign them to that team. For example, Nick Swisher is a free agent in the latest version of OOTP17. I assigned him to the AAA Yankees team in Scranton which is where he is in real-life. I also go through and check to see if any players are retired. There are a few guys who are listed as active like Vicente Padilla who are now retired from baseball. If that is the case, I will go into Commissioner Mode and retire the player.
Finally, I go to my team's roster and try to match up the 40-man roster to the real-life ballclub. I'll also match the minor league rosters to the real-life opening day ones for AAA, AA, High A and Low A ballclubs. I also will double-check to make sure that the uniform numbers are correct as well. Now, some of you may think that I'm crazy. Okay, I AM crazy. But this is what works for me. What works for you?
