Best way to create a dynamic historical MLB?

I recently played the 1940s and 1950s trying to model team relocation based on who did poorly/lost money. I kept the Philadelphia Athletics in Philly come 1954 since they had won two world series the previous two years and instead moved the Phillies to KC as the "Kansas City Blues" (thanks retro uniforms thread!) since they had been at the bottom of the NL the prior five seasons.

Anyway, come the end of the 1955 season, the Blues reverted back to the Phillies sans any record of their move to KC and the Athletics disappeared, replaced by an expansion Kansas City Athletics in the AL. I tried to undue this and in the process accidentally deleted my save file.

So, what's the best way to try again? Should I change the historical team tags to something that's not, say, "PHA" and "KC1?" Should I turn off "automatically expand league?" Or is this impossible under the current engine?
