Online league file bug?

Hi, A friend of mine has set up an online league using OOTP17 and I am GM of one of the teams.

I am noticing a bug in that his league file is exported/archived differently from how some other online leagues that I've tested are, causing the file to be unusable.

Example, for an existing online league that I tried out, the league file is exported as:

"Example.tar.gz"

..unpacking that file gives you: "Example.tar"

..and unpacking that file give you all the folders and files you'd expect to see, namely Messages, Settings, Coaches.dat, World.dat etc..

For my friend's league file, it's as follows:

"Whatever.tar.gz"

...unpacking that file gives you:

"Whatever.tar"

...unpacking that file gives you, surprisingly, a single file called:

"Whatever"

with no extension at all, but which appears to itself be yet another .tar file, because it can be unpacked further to produce all the folders and files you'd expect: coaches.dat, names.dat etc.

So with most leagues, you get two levels of archiving followed by the league files and folders. For my friend's league, you get THREE levels of archives, followed then by the normal files.

My question is, what setting would be causing him to get that result when archiving/exporting the league file?

The result of this is that his league file can't be automatically unpacked from within OOTP17 using the "Download league file" feature, as this always reports the error "Unable to unpack files from archive". Instead I have to do the download, and then manually go in and triple-unpack, then copy the contents over to the Whatever.lg folder where they ultimately belong.

Any help would be appreciated, and if any additional info is needed just let me know.

Thanks!

I don't know why, but the message editor here is absorbing and discarding all of my line breaks. I typed the message above in a nicely spaced out and easy-to read way, and instead it's been condensed into one ugly run-on paragraph. Others don't seem to be having this problem.

EDIT: I went back and edited the message using manual HTML line break tags in each instance to force a better layout. Quite a clunky method needed, but hopefully it helps.

I haven't uploaded a league file to go along with this bug report, because the issue is the archiving of the league file itself, not its sub-contents.

If an uploaded league file is truly desired in order to diagnose this issue, I will certainly provide one. However, as mentioned the issue is with the structure of the archive itself, not the contents per se.

Not sure what is going on here. What operating system do you and your friend use? A debug trace of the league file creation would be interesting. You can enable the trace through the Settings->Troubleshooting menu.

He is using the Steam version under Windows to create/export the online league file. I have both the native Windows and native Linux versions of the game, though all I'm doing is receiving the file.

When direct download/import failed within OOTP17 itself, I examined the structure of the file using 7-Zip and compared it with other league files from other leagues.

That's how I discovered the archiving difference. Gz>Tar>Files versus Gz>Tar>UnlabeledTar>Files.

I'll mention the debug trace to him and/or draw his attention to this thread. Thanks.

EDIT: What's odd is that if I myself import his league file manually, which works fine, load that league/game and then do an export of the league file (I'm set as a commissioner too) it exports correctly as just a tar.gz with no extra level. It's only from his end that it messes up.

Matt I can't seem to upload or attach a file to a post. Perhaps that function is disabled because I'm relatively new.

I am the Commish for the league OllieOxenfree is referring to and despite making numerous adjustments we are still having the problem.

I'd like to send you the debug file.

For the future reference of anyone experiencing this issue, it has been successfully SOLVED at least in our situation.

League files are correctly created/exported from OOTP17 with the usual "double-archiving" structure, ie a "tar.gz" file with a ".tar" file inside it, and the actual files and folders within that tar file.

The problem occurs, for some reason, when performing an HTML type download of the league file, either manually from the website where it is posted, or from within OOTP's league-file-download function via the game menu.

Downloading the file using HTML method causes the received file to become "triple-archived", meaning a "tar.gz" file with a ".tar" file within that, and then an additional single file within THAT, having no filename extension but in fact being yet another .tar file. Extracting THAT file produces the folders and files expected.

The solution is to use the FTP download method instead. From within OOTP:

File -> online league -> online league ftp settings -> league file download options..

Tick the checkbox "use ftp to download league" and enter all of the login credentials and path details as needed.

For some reason, downloading the league file via FTP, either within OOTP or using a standalone FTP client, works correctly. Downloading it via HTML, either via OOTP or via a browser/website, causes a malfunction where the file becomes "triple-archived" instead of the expected "double-archived".

Since switching to the FTP method, we have experienced no further issues. Mods please feel free to mark this question as "solved", if such an option exists.

Thanks
