Head coach bug

Hi!

I'm playing a standard game as GM of the Montréal Canadiens. I am now at the end of season 2019-20. Near the end of the season, I received a message saying that my job as head coach was in jeopardy because I appeared to have lost control of the dressing room. I thought that was pretty weird.

The thing is, Claude Julien is my head coach. When I go in the "Personnel" page, it indeed shows that he is head coach, both in the "Montreal staff" list and in the "Head coach" box. My name is listed as General manager, also both in the staff list and "General Manager" box. Also, when I click on both our names, the correct position is written underneath our names. In his profile, the "Action menu" is greyed out but I can release him if I right click on his name in the staff list. So far so good.

After I received that message, I did notice that on the screen right before you play/sim a game, my name was listed as head coach. Also, when I click on Claude Julien's name, his head coach record doesn't show the season I've just played.

So all of this is highly suspicous. It seems to explain why I had such a poor record in my last season (despite an improved lineup) and why almost every other team had the coaching advantage.

Is this a bug? Or did I somehow do something wrong? I'm playing on version 4.6 build 75 but I believe my game was created on an older version, if that helps.

Yeah, that should be showing Julien's name as head coach on the pregame screen, not yours, so something's not right there. Can you upload the save for us to have a look at? See this post for uploading instructions.

Got it, thanks. We're going to have to dig into this a little further, a couple of things don't look right. But I think I found a workaround for you: if you renew his contract (right-click on his name from the personnel screen), you get the "hiring a head coach will switch you into GM-only mode" message, as if he wasn't there already. That seems to reset it back to the way things should be - Julien's name shows up in the pregame screen as head coach after that.

Alright so I did exactly what you said and it worked just fine. I completed the 2020-21 season with Julien as head coach. But now I'm at the start of the 2021-2022 season and the same exact problem has re-appeared. I really don't wanna waste another season with myself as head coach. I would gladly release Julien to hire Babcock but my owner won't allow me to fire Julien.

Doesn't look like we've been able to find the problem yet, but that second save may help narrow it down, thanks.
