Fictional Historical Sim From 1920-
I usually play exclusively fictional, but decided to twist my normal way of playing and went with a historical start but with some changes:
- Integration began in 1920. - Expansion happened earlier. - Team moves were not necessarily the same. Code:
Here’s a timeline: 1920: MLB is integrated. 1944: AL adds Baltimore & Milwaukee. NL adds Kansas City & Minneapolis. 1947: Milwaukee and Minnesota swap leagues. 1953: St. Louis Cardinals move to Jersey City, NJ 1957: Brooklyn Dodgers move to Los Angeles. New York Giants move to San Francisco. 1960: Boston Bees (NL) move to Toronto. 1961: AL adds Los Angeles & Dallas. 1962: Leagues split into two divisions each. LCS (best of 5 games) 1962: Toronto Bees move to Buffalo, NY. 1966: Washington Senators move to Seattle. Philadelphia A’s move to Louisville. 1970: AL conducts a 5-year experiment on the designated hitter. 1975: Both leagues adopt the DH. 1976: Buffalo Bees move to Atlanta. 1977: Wild cards added to both leagues. 1977: Cleveland Spiders disband, become the Toronto Blue Jays. 1979: AL adds San Diego and Buffalo. NL adds Montreal & Denver. 1980: Play-in series for wild-cards added (best-of-3) 1980: Louisville A’s move to Nashville. 1981: Wild Card series abandoned. Post-season reverts to 4 teams per league. 1981: Interleague play begins. 1981: Nashville A’s move to New Orleans. 1981: San Diego Padres move to Louisville. 1988: Chicago White Sox move to Tampa, Florida. 1989: MLB realigns to three divisions per league. Post-season expands to 5 teams per league. 1990: Buffalo Bisons move to Washington, D.C., swap leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers 1991: Milwaukee Brewers disband, become the Portland Beavers. 1992: Cincinnati Reds move to Charlotte, N.C., New Orleans A’s disband, become the Oakland Oaks. 1996: AL expands to Indianapolis. NL expands to Phoenix. 2007: Washington Nationals move to Vancouver, B.C. 2009: Strike-shortened year (82 games). All 30 teams made post-season. I love that there was a Denver team as early as 1979. I'm curious what they are called and how they have fared.

I love that they started as the Denver Bears- nice nod to our local baseball history. And I'm glad to see that at least they have been marginally competitive, even if they haven't made it to the promised land yet.

Unlikely All-Time Greats
I went back in history to look at some all-time greats. Here are a few stars that shined in our league who didn't have MLB careers of note.
OF George Kaufman (1944-66) - In real life, he was a minor leaguer who never saw the majors. In this sim, he was a first-ballot Hall of Famer who ended his career with 3595 hits, 2976 walks, a career .308 average and 215 home runs. OF Cool Papa Bell (1925-45) - Since integration happened in 1920, Cool Papa Bell got to play in the bigs. He was a 9-time league MVP, won 4 World Series titles and ended his career as a .378 hitter, 4225 hits, and 606 career home runs. ALL-TIME LEADERS BY POSITION C: Johnny Bench, (Los Angeles Angels) - 467 HR Roy Campanella, (Brooklyn Dodgers) - .347 1B: Bill Skowron, (Chicago White Sox) - 696 Lou Gehrig, (Philadelphia Phillies) .351 2B: Jeff Kent, (Active) - 337 Riggs Stephenson (NY Yankees) - .348 3B: Eddie Matthews (Detroit Tigers) - 619 John McGraw (NY Giants) - .350 SS: Alex Rodriguez (Active) - 566 Ballplayer Cooney (Philadelphia Phillies) - .354 LF: Barry Bonds (Active) - 891 Ed Delahanty - .375 CF: Sammy Sosa (Seattle Pilots) - 540 Ty Cobb - (Detroit Tigers) - .375 RF: Frank Robinson (NY Yankees) - 707 Cool Papa Bell (STL Browns) - .386 |
