Expansion nickname help
OK, I've decided to do an expansion to 32 teams. After kicking around a lot of different ideas and formats, I'm going to keep it pretty simple. Had thought about merging AL and NL into the Tracy Ringolsby model of MLB with four 8-team divisions, but can't see baseball relinquishing the leagues. So, going to have 8 divisions, although still deciding on playoffs (likely to stick with just the 8 division winners, although still considering adding 4 wildcards, with single-game play-ins). Am going to make DH rule universal to both leagues, since it seems several teams will need to change leagues for best geographical divisions. What I am thinking right now is the following:
AL East: Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays AL North: Indians, Tigers, White Sox, Brewers AL Midwest: Royals, Astros, Rangers, Twins AL West: Angels, Mariners, A's, Rockies NL East: Mets, Phillies, Nationals, Expos NL South: Braves, Rays, Marlins, Charlotte NL Central: Pirates, Cardinals, Cubs, Reds NL West: Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Diamondbacks (If anyone has better ideas on divisional groupings, feel free to note them) As is evident, decided to use Montreal and Charlotte for expansion, after considering Portland, Vegas, San Antonio and Mexico City. Montreal will always be the Expos in my book, so my quest for help is the minor detail of the nickname for the Charlotte franchise. I've pared a bunch of my own possibilities to four. So, if you would like to cast a vote for one of the following four, it would help me determine which might be best. Or, if you would like to give an idea of your own, feel free (I like to have nicknames that tie into cities/states/regions). Anyway, these are my four current choices, with the need to pinpoint one. Thanks in advance. Carolina Pilots Carolina Pines Charlotte Lancers Charlotte Dragons |

I was in a similar situation and had the same destination for my expansion team. I went with the Charlotte Snappers . . . only because that was the name of a team that some kind soul in the Mods Forum chose for his logos and uniforms.
Would you consider this?

Yes, I do like that. Quite a lot actually. Definitely adding it to my choices.
Dragons was my least favorite of the other four, so I think I will replace it with this and consider from there. Thanks! |

Charlotte Royals... city was named for a German princess... nickname is the "Queen City".
Charlotte Tycoons... city is a major financial and banking center... ranks third in assets in US after New York City and San Francisco. Charlotte Hornets... longtime minor league team in the city... 1901 until 1973. Charlotte Speedsters... NASCAR racing industry is centered in the city... 75% of the NASCAR people live in Charlotte. Charlotte Rounders... could be a double-meaning nickname... "rounder" for car racing... cars go "round-and-round"... other meaning is for baseball... "rounders" was a forerunner of the game of baseball. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-18-2018 at 06:40 PM. |

I thought Cincy was the Queen City. Did this change?

The Scots. The flag of Charlotte is the Saint Andrews Flag of Scotland, or Saltire with a City Crest.

Why are people so obsessed with moving the Rays to the NL / Rockies to the AL? (OP is also moving the Brewers back, which makes marginally more sense, but that doesn't excuse the other two moves.)

My idea:
AL East: Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, Nationals AL Metro: Indians, Tigers, Rays, Blue Jays AL Central: Royals, White Sox, Brewers, Twins AL West: Angels, Mariners, A's, Rangers NL East: Mets, Phillies, Pirates, Expos NL Metro: Braves, Reds, Marlins, Astros NL Central: DBacks, Cardinals, Cubs, Rockies NL West: Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Portand That's just my idea though. |

I'd actually contract Tampa Bay, since I always thought they were kind of out of place in their division, and in the American League as a whole geographically. I'd add a team in Portland to replace them, move the Brewers back to the American League where they belong, and align the divisions as follows:
AL East: Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Orioles AL North: Indians, Brewers, Tigers, Twins AL Central: Royals, Astros, Rangers, White Sox AL West: Mariners, Angels, Athletics, Portland NL East: Braves, Charlotte, Marlins, Nationals NL North: Phillies, Mets, Expos, Pirates NL Central: Reds, Cardinals, Cubs, *****Rockies***** NL West: Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Diamondbacks ***** This sounds worse geographically than it actually is when you look at these divisional groupings on a map.

You are right... Cincinnati is known by that, too. I just saw it in the Wikipedia history of Charlotte. |

Is there a reason everyone is siding with North and Central instead of North and South for divisions?
