Rule 5 still being enforced next season

I drafted a player, Yadier Alvarez, on the 12/18/2019 Rule 5 draft in my league. He was injured at the time and missed much of the 2020 season. Spent it on the IL, then a month on rehab, then joined my team when he had to and stayed there for the balance of the season.

It's now opening day of the 2021 season, and the game won't let me demote him to the minors because he's a rule 5 player. But he's served his year in the majors (even if much was on the DL) and should be eligible to be optioned.

League Name (and zipfile) is First Try Jays.

Thanks!

This was a new rule added this year to the game that has been in MLB for a while now. A player must spend 90 days on the active roster or they retain rule 5 status until they hit that point.

Oh wow. I did not know that. Thanks for the quick response.

And curse you guys and your better-informed-on-league-rules-than-me ruining my roster planning.

Guess someone's sitting in the 'pen on long relief duty until I can safely send him down.

I presume the 90 days are cumulative between (in this case) 2020 and 2021? He spent about two months on the active roster in 2020, so I should just have to wait out April. Unless I'm pleasantly surprised....

Honestly, I didn't even know about the rule, but someone on the beta team mentioned it and ChrisF did most of the hard work in getting it into the game.

I believe that on the contract page of the player, it should list how many days he has left before he loses rule 5 status, although I don't remember when that shows up (would be either at the start of the off-season or when the pre-season rolls around in February). I'm not positive how rehabs time counts towards that mark, either.
