2025-26 Owen Sound Attack (Chasing the Memorial Cup)

The 2025-26 Owen Sound Attack are at the quarter mark of the season, time to catch up with the team to see how the current season is going. After a heartbreaking loss in 2024-25 to the Calgary Hitmen in the Memorial Cup final, the Attack try once again to reach their goal. The team is off to a flying start but first, let's catch up on the offseason moves and there were plenty of them.

2025 OHL Draft Priority Selection Picks

1-20 - Conner Sarjeant LW 5'11" 198
3-41 - Taylor Gilmore LW 6'6" 212
3-60 - Shane Sinclair LW 6'2" 204
4-80 - Agdun Orru LW 5'9" 163
5-100 - Jordan Locke RD 5'11" 196
6-120 - Dylan Aspeslet RD 6'0" 183
7-140 - Richie Davenport LW 6'2" 186
8-160 - Daniel Wheeler RD 6'2" 186
9-180 - Michael Kane RW 6'1" 207
10-200 - Brandon Egener C 5'11" 162
14-280 - Jesse Maynard C 5'10 164

2025 CHL Import Picks

1-58 - Jakub Beran (CZE) 16yrs LW 5'10 164
2-120 - Andreas Porkka (FIN) 17yrs C 6'5" 233

Sarjeant, Gilmore and Sinclair will all see some action in 2025 with Owen Sound. Orru, Locke and Aspeslet are likely players for the future. Beran looks like he has some serious skill but with the 2 player foreign limit it will be tough to bring him over this season.

With a glut of players at LW and some holes in our lineup, we looked to make a few trades in the offseason.

Trades

To NB: Sloan Holroyd (18 yrs LW), 5th round pick, 12th round pick
To OS: Isaiah Pitcairn G (19 yrs G)

To SAG: Alessandro Accardo (17 yrs LW), 5th round pick, 8th round pick
To OS: Ron Brice (17 yrs C)

To LDN: Richie Davenport (16 yrs LW) (rights), 2nd round pick
To OS: Justin Stellick (16 yrs G), 4th round pick

Current Injuries

Mark Dietrich - out 3-4 months with torn calf muscle
Louis-Charles Landry - out 2-3 weeks with broken hand (has missed all of season so far)
Gunner Schoenroth - out day-to-day with foot contusion
Tomas Marsalek - out day-to-day with groin tightness

Also missing from lineup is Conner Sarjeant who is over playing for Canada at the U17's.

Despite key losses from last years squad, Owen Sound is off to a hot start, torching teams with their offensive prowess. Amazingly enough, goalie Andrey Misin has not lost a regular season OHL game in regulation time yet in his career. He is 31-0-2 in 35 regular season appearances. Cameron Sigrist, Matt MacDermid, Wade Chalmers, Connor Quinn and newcomer Tomas Marsalek have been leading the way, along with currently injured Mark Dietrich and Gunner Schoenroth. Marsalek was our 1st round pick (57th overall) in the 2024 CHL Import Draft who decided to come to Canada after dominating the Czech junior leagues.

When healthy, Owen Sound is proving tough to stop, simply annihilating the opposition thus far.

Both expansion teams, the Brantford 99ers and Milton Steamers are currently holding down playoff positions in their conferences. We will see if this success continues throughout the season.

The team just received more bad injury news as Cameron Sigrist, their top scorer will be out for 6 months with a broken kneecap.

The Tampa Bay 2nd round pick is likely done for the season and may have played his final game ever with Owen Sound. A huge blow to the season and teams playoff chances. Players like Sigrist are difficult to replace.

Halfway mark of the season as we reach the World Juniors. Owen Sound is still in 1st place despite the injuries. A bunch of our players are over at the WJC's and we have a couple of guys day-to-day so our roster is looking a bit thin at the moment.

Andrey Misin (G) - Russia
Wade Chalmers (LW) - Canada
Connor Quinn (C) - Canada
Tomas Marsalek (C) - Czech Republic

Matt MacDermid has assumed the #1 defenceman role and team captain with the departures of Noah Cochrane and Madden Steen. He is having a tremendous season from the blueline, leading the team in scoring. The Winnipeg Jets own his NHL rights and have to be salivating at the chance to have him patrol their blueline possibly as early as next season.

Wade Chalmers is now 2nd in Owen Sound history in goals and points and should break Bobby Ryan's record of 325 career points. Chalmers, to this date, has been my only 20 rated player and has been a scoring machine since his rookie campaign.

A bunch of younger players have made their marks this season with the Attack. Our center depth is really thin and we still might make a deadline move to acquire a top notch goalie to make another run at the OHL crown. Look for Owen Sound to circle the trade market this season to add some depth, especially with a bunch of injuries.

Meanwhile, the defending Memorial Cup champs from out West, the Calgary Hitmen are cruising along again with a 28-2-1 record. It's way too early to say but could there be a rematch of last year's Memorial Cup final this year????

My trade rules are the following. For forwards and defencemen, I only trade for players that the CPU puts on the trade block. For goalies, I only look at teams who are not contenders for the OHL playoffs as realistically, they would be moving goalies in trades if it made sense for them. I'm also emulating real life OHL draft pick rules and not trading for multiple first round picks.

Owen Sound has made a trade with Ottawa. Carson Kelterbourne, who was on the trade block is on his way to Owen Sound.

To OS: Carson Kelterbourne (C), OTT6 2026
To OTT: Agdun Orru (LW), OS2 2027, LDN4 2027

The 67's are in the thick of a playoff race and division crown but also have their eyes on the future for their organization. In moving Kelterbourne, they acquire a talented winger in Orru who was just a 4th round pick himself. He has seen action in 4 games with the Attack notching 1 goal and 1 assist. His most recent game he was named second star of the game. Ottawa also acquires a couple of high 2027 picks to stockpile.

In adding Kelterbourne, the Attack get the center that they were looking for. With Sigrist out for the season, they only had 3 natural centers on the roster in Quinn, Marsalek and Brice. They had experimented with trying Louis-Charles Landry and Taylor Gilmore at the center position but now have what the doctor ordered. In Ottawa, Kelterbourne was the 67's #2 center and relied on for offence but with Owen Sound, he will be more of a depth piece. The deal was attractive as well because he is only 18 meaning the Attack will have him for the next 1.5 years. Owen Sound will likely use the newcomer in a 3rd line position once they can ice a full strength roster after the world juniors.

OS thinking about making a blockbuster trade with Sudbury to acquire the OHL's top goalie and Canada WJC starter, Brennan Cook.

Here is the package that Sudbury wants in return. It is a very hefty price.

Andrey Misin (G) - my current starting goalie and Russia's WJC starter
Jared Newbury (LD) - 17 years old and an OHL rookie, Newbury already has two silvers and a bronze for Canada at international tourneys. Has future stud written all over him.
2026 2nd
2027 3rd
2028 2nd

Cook would represent an upgrade in net. I would have to force trade the deal to make it go through. Sudbury is well out of the playoff race and in real life, would be looking to acquire several assets for their star goalie.

Misin and Newbury are two players they can build on and with 3 high picks they could turn into a real contender in 2-3 years. Pretty crazy that Misin has a career OHL record of 43-3-2 2.53 GAA, .888 sv% with 5 shutouts and is looking at possibly being replaced. He is having a subpar season despite being 21-3-1, sporting a 3.07 GAA, below average .873 sv% and a 58 game rating.

Real tough deal to pull off for a half year of Cook but I think it's a fair trade for both teams.......what do you guys think? Should we force trade this and see what happens?

After the World Juniors tourney, we decide not to make the blockbuster trade and keep Misin and Newbury.

Misin had a real successful World Juniors and we are expecting him to be able to take that new confidence and elevate his game to a higher level in the second half of the season.

that C being injured is a painful loss but you got a crazy good top 4 D and solid goalie so should be okay even if the O isnt as potent

Yeah I've made it a point to draft some good young defence in 2nd and 3rd rounds of previous drafts and it is paying off now. Seems like most of my defencemen progress pretty nicely. Pretty sure I drafted Forbes and Blaisdell both in the 2nd round in the draft the one year.

I've got about 10 games left to sim in the regular season. Dietrich looks like he will be back before playoffs which is really nice as it gives us more depth and size up front to work with. Dietrich is a monster 6'3" 236 lbs. Kelterbourne just got hurt for a couple of weeks but he should also be back by playoffs.

I'm still a little worried in net with Misin. Pitcairn has actually been a pretty good backup, leading the OHL in GAA at the moment, so hopefully if Misin has problems in the playoffs, Pitcairn can provide some help.

Really hoping for another shot at the Hitmen in the Memorial Cup this year but first we need to get through the OHL, which won't be a cakewalk.

In a funny twist, Charlottetown will actually be back in the Memorial Cup again this year as they are the host team. Not nearly as good as they were last year though.

If you remember him from the previous thread, Boyd Murphy from Guelph is absolutely ripping up the league this year. He leads in points by almost 30 on the next guy. Guelph and Owen Sound have formed a bit of a rivalry the last couple of seasons as I've noticed a bunch of fights in games with them so hopefully we can play them again in the playoffs which would be fun.

Should be able to start the playoffs this weekend.

The 2025-26 OHL regular season has concluded and Owen Sound finishes up with a 55-10-3 record. For some reason, the OHL finished up their regular season much earlier than the QMJHL or WHL so their playoffs start earlier. Might have something to do with the league expansion.

It was quite the race for the last few spots in the East. Sudbury went on a tear following the trade deadline with Brennan Cook but ultimately came up short of the playoffs, losing a do-or-die game with Niagara 4-2 to decide the last spot in the East.

The Kitchener Rangers (29-34-5) will be our first round opponent as they try to avenge a conference final loss last year to us.

Matt MacDermid finished 2nd in the league in points with 96 as a defenceman! Incredible season for him. Him, Forbes, Blaisdell and Bostrom form a solid top 4 for the Attack.

Wade Chalmers becomes Owen Sound's franchise leader in points with 332, eclipsing Bobby Ryan's record of 325. Amazingly enough, Chalmers didn't have the superstar season he was hoping for and fell 1 goal short of tying Owen Beck's 150 goals.

Here are the first round matchups and regular season standings.

Eastern Conference

#8 Niagara (31-28-9) at #1 Mississauga (38-19-11)
#7 Peterborough (32-28-8) at #2 Ottawa (38-23-7)
#6 Kingston (34-29-5) at #3 Oshawa (39-27-2)
#5 North Bay (34-27-7) at #4 Hamilton (36-28-4) - rematch of last year East 1st round

Western Conference

#8 Kitchener (29-34-5) at #1 Owen Sound (55-10-3)
#7 London (32-35-1) at #2 Windsor (44-18-6)
#6 Saginaw (36-30-2) at #3 Guelph (42-24-2)
#5 Sarnia (38-25-5) at #4 Erie (41-24-3)

Preview of our 1st round opponents, the Kitchener Rangers.

The Rangers lost a couple of their top players from last season but are led by blueliner Coda Erhardt. Erhardt is a 5th round pick of the New Jersey Devils and will be looking to lead the Rangers in an upset over Owen Sound.

Kitchener doesn't have one true superstar on their team but rely on balanced scoring to get the job done. 13 10 goal scorers with Erhardt's 22 goals leading the team shows they have a good balance and depth. The Rangers also have a fairly large team as their smallest player, goalie Andrey Sorokin is listed at 5'10" 202 lbs.

The series will feature a battle of a pair of Russians in net, Andrey Sorokin for Kitchener and Andrey Misin for Owen Sound. If the Rangers have any hope of competing in this series, Sorokin will have to be on top of his game.

In the West, Owen Sound and Windsor move on as expected while Sarnia and Saginaw both pull off upsets. Kitchener does a good job of stopping MacDermid, limiting the all star defenceman to only 2 assists in 5 games. Unheralded rookie Spencer Strowbridge had a nice first round series with 2 goals and 2 assists in 5 games to help Owen Sound outlast Kitchener. The Attack will have to play much better against a Saginaw team which they eliminated in the 1st round last year who are now all a year older. Saginaw has much of the same players as last year and they will try to get their revenge.

Round 2 matchups and Owen Sound stats after Round 1.

#7 Peterborough at #1 Mississauga
#6 Kingston at #5 North Bay

#6 Saginaw at #1 Owen Sound
#5 Sarnia at #2 Windsor

Last year, Owen Sound dispatched Saginaw in the West 1st round of playoffs. It was a mismatch of an experienced, veteran laden team versus a young and inexperienced squad. Now a year later, these two teams meet again, will it be different this time around? The Attack are not as experienced or as strong as last year and Saginaw's younger players have matured.

Once again, Saginaw is led by their top line trio of Jeff Sheppard, John McCullough and Jozef Bires. Throw in 6'3" 225 lb. behemoth newcomer Pedro Vazquez on the blueline with his 18 goals and 47 points and Saginaw looks like a team capable of an upset. 6'6" 227 lb. Matus Mudroncik is also back on the 2nd line, looking to make his presence felt on the Attack defenders.

OHL Round 2 Results

#7 Peterborough defeats #1 Mississauga 4-3 - MAJOR UPSET ALERT!!!!

GM1 - MIS 6 PET 5
GM2 - MIS 6 PET 3
GM3 - PET 4 MIS 2
GM4 - MIS 3 PET 2
GM5 - PET 4 MIS 2
GM6 - PET 4 MIS 3 2OT
GM7 - PET 2 MIS 0

The Petes continue their stunning playoff run, coming from behind 3-1 in the series to win it in 7.

#5 North Bay defeats #6 Kingston 4-3

GM1 - KIN 6 NB 3
GM2 - NB 5 KIN 4
GM3 - NB 3 KIN 2
GM4 - NB 2 KIN 1
GM5 - KIN 3 NB 1
GM6 - KIN 4 NB 3
GM7 - NB 5 KIN 4

North Bay is making another successful playoff run, dispatching the Frontenacs in 7 games. Kingston had a 4-2 lead in the 3rd period of Game 7 only to watch it evaporate with three North Bay scores, including the game winner by Nicolas Castonguay which was his 1st goal of the playoffs Castonguay only had 5 goals all season, this one in the playoffs was the biggest of his career.

#1 Owen Sound defeats Saginaw 4-1

GM1 - OS 4 SAG 0
GM2 - OS 3 SAG 2 OT - Brody Bostrom with the OT winner
GM3 - OS 2 SAG 1
GM4 - SAG 6 OS 3
GM5 - OS 5 SAG 2

Owen Sound makes short work of Saginaw in 5 games. Saginaw slowed down Owen Sound's offence by limiting them to 17 goals in 5 games but only score 11 themselves. Once again, the Spirit season is finished by the Attack.

#5 Sarnia defeats #2 Windsor 4-0 - UPSERT ALERT!!!

GM1 - SAR 3 WIN 2
GM2 - SAR 6 WIN 1
GM3 - SAR 4 WIN 1
GM4 - SAR 6 WIN 4

Major upset here as many OHL experts had predicted an Owen Sound-Windsor West final since the beginning of the season. Despite having projected #1 overall NHL pick, defenceman Ralph White in their lineup, the Spitfires could not match the depth of the Sarnia squad. Sarnia is now 8-1 in these playoffs and face their biggest challenge of the season in trying to take down the defending champs.

Conference Finals:

#7 Peterborough at #5 North Bay
#5 Sarnia at #1 Owen Sound

Standing in the way of Owen Sound's second straight OHL finals appearance are the Sarnia Sting. In the OHL power rankings, the Attack are #1 and the Sting are #2 so this should be a dandy of a series!

The Sting are a very well built team as they had struggled mightily for a couple of seasons. Therefore, they were able to get some high draft picks and really capitalize on that.

Their first line of Ryan Uminski, Aleksey Guzhvin and Timo Pfiefer carry a perfect blend of size, skill and grit. Their forwards are so deep that former #1 overall OHL pick, Nolan Sproule is featured as a 3rd line winger with his impeccable defensive game allowing him to slow down the opposition's top forwards.

Their defence is led by veterans 20 year old Ujjalroop Gill and 20 year old Matt Balness. Balness is huge, 6'5" 237 lbs. and a physical presence on the blueline. Opposition forwards will have to keep their heads up with him on patrol.

2023 OHL 1st overall pick Bradley Langrill is featured in net. Langrill has the ability to steal games by himself and it will be real interesting to see if Owen Sound's usually potent offence sparked by their mobile defencemen will be able to penetrate the Sting's defence and put pucks past Langrill.

This has the makings of a classic series that could go the distance. Sarnia and Owen Sound are both 8-1 in these playoffs, one of them is going home and the other is moving on.....can Sarnia end Owen Sound's reign of terror in the OHL?

Blainville-Boisbrand makes short work of Rouyn-Noranda in an opening round tuneup. Shawinigan and Drummondville both outlast their opponents. Sherbrooke gains revenge on last years shocking loss to Gatineau in the 2nd round.

WHL 1st Round Results

Everett (46-14-8) defeats Prince George (27-35-6) 4-2
Tri-City (39-24-5) defeats Spokane (40-21-7) 4-3
Vancouver (37-23-8) defeats Kamloops (28-35-5) 4-1
Kelowna (34-29-5) defeats Victoria (30-35-3) 4-1

No real upsets here. Spokane is again bounced by Tri-City in the playoffs as that has been a real rivalry over the last couple of seasons.

Calgary (55-8-5) defeats Brandon (30-33-5) 4-2
Edmonton (35-27-6) defeats Red Deer (38-27-3) 4-0
Medicine Hat (30-33-5) defeats Moose Jaw (42-21-5) 4-3
Prince Albert (35-29-4) defeats Regina (38-25-5)

Calgary powers past Brandon again in the 1st round. I kind of feel bad for the Wheat Kings. Medicine Hat and Prince Albert now face each other after both teams scored big upsets.

OHL reporters are abuzz with excitement as after two games of the Western Conference Finals, the Sarnia Sting find themselves in front of Owen Sound 2-0 in the series!

Sarnia won Game 1 3-1 and followed it up with a convincing 7-4 victory in Game 2. The Sting now go home with a 2-0 series lead in what can only be described by OHL observers as "shocking".

The question for Owen Sound now becomes do they make a goalie switch before a pivotal Game 3? Andrey Misin has more experience but has allowed 9 goals on 63 shots thus far in the series. Isaiah Pitcairn is the backup who had solid regular season stats but zero playoff experience. Tough decision looms ahead of Game 3.
