An FHM n00b's tactics question

I'm having huge trouble with defence on my team. I have what I would call a well balanced set of forwards and defencemen (a balance of offence and defence on forward lines, balanced D-pairings) but I can have games where I have 50 shots and score 4/5 goals but the opposition has 20 shots and scores 4/5 too.

This leads me to think that I need to get my offence to stop wasting so much offence with (probably) bad shots, so I tell them to pass more, but it doesnt seem to change much, just keep having massive shot numbers. (Now, seeing as I am playing as the Ducks, getting shots and scoring goals is actually fine with me. Blocked&Missed numbers are massive aswell, very annoying to see it all go to waste)

However, on Defence it seems like we are good at stopping the opponents from taking these bad shots but give up far too many "high quality" chances.

I know from searching that the common response to "tactics" is that everybody does something different, but I was more curious if anybody else had experienced this and if/how they made the situation better.

My major issue is that it makes John Gibson look like swiss cheese. His GAA and SV% is garbage but his W/L is good. I'm not looking for shutout after shutout, just some more realistic numbers from GAA and SV%

(also this season, after 3 solid years of very few injuries, my D keep getting injured, constantly, I carry 8 on the roster just in case now - any specific tactics that calm the injuries? probably stretching on that one)

I gave up a lot to get Vasy from TB for my Canucks, and he has won 1 Vezina, but this year...maybe? He's getting better after the trade deadline.

In any case, I run into a bit of the same problem. As far as injuries go, make sure you have a very good trainer. That helps them not get big injuries, most of my are less than 2 weeks.

Just adding some SS's to back this up a bit. Tbh, it's become a bit less frequent this season, but every now and then then it pops up.

The Tampa and Minnesota ones are examples of dominating a team but their goalie just laughing in my face.

The Ottawa one is "why should I bother setting my tactical setting for swapping goalies to "very fast" if very fast is 6 goals in 26 minutes?" Note: My backup then came in, had a 22 save shut out. (Also, iirc Gibson started the following night and had a shutout...)

Ugh I dunno, element of randomness and I suppose I have to lose sometimes?

Would love to get a response to this one too. Changing passing/shooting in unit/player settings doesnt seem to affect how many shots players make. After creating a few custom games and playing with same team and just changing those settings the overall number of shots a player makes at the end of the season is pretty much the same.

A dev probably should answer or confirm this, but this is something that I had brought up in the past. The "quick" answer was that the sim engine was too ratings dependent at the player level when it came to shots and that it would be a manual task to fix it. That was for previous iterations of the game, so I have no idea if work has been done on that or not for FHM7.
My opinion (as in, I don't know that for a fact) is that the individual ratings for this, combined with league totals for end of season totals don't mesh together perfectly, which creates imbalances when some teams get a lot stronger than others. At the game level, you will see a lot of what you're seeing, but if you look at the totals at the end of the season, my guess is that it will line up pretty good with where the numbers should be.
I was seeing the exact same thing you are in last year's game in my historical series using the Sens. At the start of the save (started in 1992 when the Sens joined the league and they were atrocious) I would routinely get outshot 64-12 or something crazy like that when playing the super teams like Pittsburgh and Detroit, when in real life, as bad as the Sens were, they weren't getting outshot that badly. Then over time I built a behemoth of a team, and I would outshoot the opponent 73-9 on a regular basis, but would still allow 2 goals on 9 shots. My guess is that the total offensive talent of my team was so high that it was tipping the scale my way too much. I even allowed only 3 shots total to the Islanders in one game.
All this to say...I would take the amount of shots with a grain of salt. I'd focus more on getting players that are complimentary of each other than trying to find the perfect tactical balance to get shots "just right".
