Rebuilding the Texas Rangers - OOTP22

Hey everyone,

Welcome to my first long term sim on OOTP22. I have decided to (attempt to) rebuild the Texas Rangers.

I wasn't sure if I would put this up on the forum, but figured why not after finishing the 2021 season.

So here is a recap on the season that was.

We finished with a record of 70-92 (and we lost 10 in a row to finish September). We were much better at home (45-36) than away (25-56).
We finished 3rd last in the AL (8th last in MLB).

Let's recap some of the roster moves we made throughout the season, shall we?

Here is the trading difficulty settings I am working with.

April
-Claimed Tony Kemp off waivers (lost our CF for 5 weeks shortly before this)

May
-Claimed Mike Tauchman off waivers
-Released Roughned Odor
-Traded Brock Holt to LAA for Matt Thaiss and cash (needed to make room for Khris Davis and Willie Calhoun returning from rehab assignments)
-Traded Willie Calhoun to LAD for cash

June
-Selected Kumar Rocker with 2nd overall pick

Here is how Kumar Rocker did in his first season of pro ball.

Even though he wasn't outstanding at the A+ level, I still expect him to start 2022 at AA.

-Traded Mike Tauchman to WAS for Carlos Tocci and cash
-Traded Ronald Guzman to KC for Tyler Zuber and cash
-Purchased contract of Matt Thaiss from AAA (OPS of 1.299 in 105 PAs after the trade)

July
-Traded Eli White to SEA for Kendall Graveman (25% retained of $1.25m) and cash
-Traded Jordan Lyles (plus MiLB depth pitcher) to BOS for Durbin Feltman and cash
-Traded Joely Rodriguez ($2.5m) to WAS for cash
-Traded Kyle Gibson to WAS for cash (plus veteran RP we released)
-Traded Joey Gallo and Jonah Heim (55 catcher ability) with two MiLB pitchers to STL for Ali Sanchez (70 catcher ability), two upper minors SP and Masyn Winn.

Here is our scouts ratings for Masyn Winn.

Admittedly, right after I completed this trade I began to regret it and was thinking I could have gotten more in return for Gallo (who struggled to a .696 OPS for us before the trade).

August, September & October
-No transactions worth noting

Now let us take a look at how some of our pitchers performed.

-Kohei Arihara gave us a 3.7 WAR season by making 34 starts.
He posted a 4.13 ERA (4.00 FIP) but struggled in September/October.
He just turned 29 and is under team control until 2026.
-Dane Dunning gave us a 2.8 WAR season (32 starts).
He posted a 3.92 ERA (4.20 FIP) and walked 3.7 per 9 (a bit high for my liking).
He will be turning 27 and is still pre arbitration and also under team control until 2026.
-Kendall Graveman was not very good after we acquired him in a trade from Seattle. His ERA was 6.55 (4.22 FIP though).
He was hit hard with us (.834 OPS on a .371 BABIP).
He is a free agent this offseason.
-John King ended the year as our #5 starter and he was excellent in that role for most of the season (made 11 starts in AAA also).
We commonly used him as a follower with an opener (only 6 traditional starts from his 21 games) and also had him maxed out at 18 batters faced.
His ERA was 2.08 on September 15, but rough outing vs Baltimore (pain) on September 25 brought that up to 3.45 (finished at 3.71).
He is already 27, but could serve as a viable #5 SP / long man in bullpen in the short term.
-DeMarcus Evans was pretty good for us as setup guy, but his control is less than ideal (6.6 BB/9)

Now let us check in on how some of hitters fared.

-David Dahl led the way for us with a 3 WAR season (.837 OPS)
-Nate Lowe had a very good first year in Texas hitting for an OPS of .811 (2.1 WAR). He did struggle in September however (.570 OPS).
-Isiah Kiner-Falefa wasn't terrible at SS while hitting for an OPS of .705.
-Jose Trevino was surprisingly good with the bat (.741 OPS) and above average defensively with his 70 catcher ability.

In the next post I will highlight a few of our MiLB players and outline the plan for the path forward on this rebuild.

A lot of transactions and for cash, can you explain why and what your cash reserve was to end the season?

Hey pgjocki,

Thanks for the question and thanks for checking out this thread.

Most of the trades we made were to cleanup some of the roster redundancy for the 2021 season.

Let's take Brock Holt for example. We had quite a few options similar to his profile (not to mention he was a -0.8 WAR in only 34 games).
So I shopped him around and one player that caught my eye was Matt Thaiss.
So we have an offer they would accept and what I like to do is see how much more they would be willing to give us.
If we can't squeeze another prospect out of the deal then I look to see how much cash they are willing to give us ($1.25m in this case).

Sometimes there is very little offers that come in and it becomes a "take what you can get" situation.
This is what happened with Willie Calhoun. He wasn't part of our long term plans (below average defensively everywhere).
We were able to get a veteran bat on a MiLB deal (immediately released) and in this case only $75,000.

In some of my previous long term sims I would tend to overload on players in the upper minors. This would create roster management issues eventually when it came time for MiLB promotions.

Here is money available at the end of the season.

Got it, everything makes sense I just gave a $10m limit so the owner takes everything over that anyway.

I'm following to see what happens.

Arrow Taking a look at some of our prospects

Let's take a look at some of our top prospects and few we are keeping our eyes on going forward.

I already posted Kumar Rocker (MLB ranked #6) and Masyn Winn (currently our 45th best prospect which makes no sense).

Josh Jung is currently ranked the 40th best prospect in MLB. The former 8th overall pick (2019) split time last year between AA and AAA.
Although he does not need to be added to the 40 man for Rule 5 protection, he will be added and may even be our starting 3B at the start of 2022.

Hans Crouse is currently ranked the 55th best prospect in MLB. The former 2nd rounder (2017) underperformed in A+ last season. He has been promoted to AA however.
Since he does not need Rule 5 protection, we won't be adding him to our 40 man just yet.

Sam Huff is currently ranked the 80th best prospect in MLB. The former 7th rounder (2016) spent the entire year in AAA and is already on the 40 man roster.
He will be 24 next season and may very well be our backup catcher, but I am quite tempted to sell high on him because he may be destined for 1B duties anyways.

Cole Winn (no relation to Masyn Winn) is currently ranked the 99th best prospect in MLB. The former 1st rounder (2018) spent the entire year in A- and didn't quite "earn" a promotion to A+.
The (soon to be) 22 year old SP will begin 2022 in A+.

Maximo Acosta is one prospect in the lower minors we will be keeping an eye on. He was signed as an international amateur free agent in 2019 ($1.65m).
We will start training him at 2B next season (repeating in DSL) and 3B potentially the year afer (hopefully in A-).

Bayron Lora is another prospect in the lower minors to keep an eye on. He was also signed as an international amateur free agent in 2019 ($4.2m).
He was excellent with the bat in 2021, but I am leery of promoting him too quickly to A-. He split time defensively last year between LF & RF.

Justin Foscue was the 14th overall pick in 2020 and OOTP decided to start him at AA (IRL he is in A+ to start 2021). Rather than ruin his morale at the start of the season I just let him play in AA for the full season.
Rather than having him repeat AA, he has been promoted to AAA. Eventually, he might be one prospect I would be willing to move in a trade to help our MLB team (the bat is nice, but he basically position-less).

Mason Montgomery is one guy I wanted to show some love for. Any time you can find a late round gem, you want them to succeed.
I believe he may have been a "hitter" with pitching skills. He will start in A- but likely end the year in A+.

Thumbs up Offseason Plan for Hitters

Let's go through each position and put together a game plan for the offseason.

Catchers
Jose Trevino - Heading in to his age 29 season and still on a league minimum contract (currently projected at $2.6m for 2023).
He had a pretty good season with the bat (.741 OPS) to go along with above average defense (70 catcher ability).
I am tempted to trade him this offseason to help out our pitching staff.

Ali Sanchez - Heading in to his age 25 season with less than a full year of service time.
He also had a good season offensively with a .740 OPS (albeit a smaller sample size) and he also has 70 catcher ability.
His personality class is "captain" and should be one of our two catchers for a few seasons to come.

Sam Huff - Heading in to his age 24 season and spent all of 2021 in AAA.
He was very good offensively in AAA (.814 OPS) while having a poor morale since he figures he is ready for MLB.
I am leaning towards having him backup next season (if we find a good deal with Trevino) but I am not in love with his defensive skills.
He may be more of a DH/1B with the occasional start at catcher.

First Base
Nate Lowe - Turned 26 in July and had an excellent first season in Texas (.811 OPS that dropped from .853 on August 31).
With less than two years of service time, I can see with us for at least two more seasons.

Matt Thaiss - Turned 26 in May and tore the cover off the ball in AAA that basically forced us to bring him up as a bench bat.
He performed quite poorly in his 145 PAs (.630 OPS) but he still has two option years remaining and less than two years service time.

Sherten Apostel - Turning 23 in March and hit quite well in a full season of AAA (.830 OPS).
I am leaning towards having him as our backup 1B option next year because he is a RH batter.
He has enough defensive skills to give our 3B a day off if need be. Also, he only has one option year remaining.

Second Base
Nick Solak - Turning 27 in January and still pre arbitration eligible.
For his career (just less than 1000 PAs) he has only hit for an OPS of .727.
Even though he has an excellent personality, he isn't strong enough defensively to warrant a long term role with our team.\

Anderson Tejada - Turns 24 on May 1 and only has one option year remaining. He only played SS last year in AAA (.822 OPS) but we will start training him at 2B this spring.
This switch hitting Dominican may very well surpass Solak in the not so distant future.

Shortstop
Isiah Kiner-Falefa - Turning 27 in March and due to make roughly $3.5m in arbitration this offseason.
Althought he was a 2 WAR player last season, for his career his OPS is .685 and he is at best average defensively at SS.
Currently the plan is to find a trade partner to swap Isiah for a better (hopefully cheaper) defender at SS.

No other SS options truly ready for MLB in our system.

Third Base
Josh Jung - Turning 24 in February and looks more than ready for MLB pitching (.874 OPS in 66 games at AAA).
Although he isn't terrific defensively at 3B (long term he might slide to 1B), he will most likely be our opening day 3B (or by May 1).

Hopefully we can add a veteran 3B option via trade or free agency this offseason.
Charlie Culberson (soon to be 33) was a good fit, but the bat slowed down as the season went along.

Left Field
Steele Walker - Turned 25 in July and still has all 3 option years remaining.
He has not "earned" the everyday LF job, but could be our 4th OF (although his defensive is not good enough for CF).

Center Field
Leody Taveras - Just turned 23 in September and already has over 500 PAs in MLB (OPS of .613).
He does have almost 2 years of service time and only one option year remaining however.
He is above average defensively (70 OF Range), so he keeps the starting role unless we can add a better option).

Right Field
David Dahl - Turning 28 on April 1st and due to make over $6m in arbitration this winter. He is also a "fragile" player.
Similar to Kiner-Falefa, we will be looking to package Dahl in a trade for a younger outfielder.

Outfielders in AAA (AAAA type batters)
Jason Martin - 26 years old and had an OPS of .800 last year, but defensively not more than a LF or below average RF. Only has one option year remaining.

Julio Pablo Martinez - Turning 26 in March and had an OPS of .830 last year (no AA experience).
Better defensively than Martin with zero service time and 3 option years.

Carlos Tocci - 26 years old who is much better defensively than offensively (career AAA OPS below .600).
He has one year of service time and 2 option years remaining.

Davis Wendzel - Turns 25 in May and had a strong year split between AA & AAA (.847 OPS in 143 AAA PAs).
He was 41st overall in 2019, so quick riser through the system.
Based on his profile, he fits the super utility role by being able to play basically anywhere defensively.
The one knock on Wendzel is he has a poor personality profile (high greed, low loyalty and low adaptability).

The next post we will take a look at some pitchers of note, but that is where the real work needs to be done to help rebuild this team!

Smile Offseason Plan for Pitchers

Let's take a look at some of pitchers before heading in to the offseason.

Starting Pitchers
Kohei Arihara - Our current "ace" of the staff. He put up 3.7 WAR in his first season in North America.
Just turned 29 in August and is due to make $3.6m in 2022.

Dane Dunning - The soon to be 27 year old had a 2.8 WAR season in 2021 and has not reach two years of service time yet.
Our scout is not very confident in his homerun suppression (45 movement) or his ability to locate his pitches (40 control).

John King - Just turned 27 in September and this LH pitcher is the perfect up and down SP to fill a spot start when needed (two option years remaining).

We will be looking to add a variety of SP options this offseason.

Bullpen
DeMarcus Evans - This 25 year old reliever could very well be our closer in 2022.
He has been able to limit the homeruns (55 movement) but his control is poor (40 rated but career BB/9 of 6).

Jose Leclerc - Turning 28 in December. Missed all of 2021 with TJ surgery.
Due to make $4.75m in 2022 and $6m in 2023 (team option for 2024 at $6.25m)
He is absolutely trade bait at this point.

Brett De Geus - Turning 24 in a few days, this rule 5 pick was excellent for us before getting hurt in August (2.51 ERA / 3.07 FIP).
He will be one of our key setup / closer / stopper options for 2022 and beyond.

Jonathan Hernandez - Only 25 years old and has an option year remaining. Coming off a down season, but I like his BB/9 (even though our scout gives him a 45).
I might try to extend him for 2023 this offseason once his contract for 2022 is renewed.

Brett Martin - Turning 27 in April, this LH reliever was pretty reliable in 2021 (3.78 ERA / 3.81 FIP).
He is due to make roughly $1m in arbitration this offseason.

Taylor Hearn - Just turned 27 in August, but this LH reliever will likely serve as trade bait this offseason.
His performance was mediocre and our scout gives him a 40 grade for movement & control.

Josh Sborz - Soon to be 28 year old RH reliever who was a -0.3 WAR player in 2021.
He profiles out as a middle relief option, but could also serve as a trade candidate.

Tyler Zuber - This 26 year old RH reliever came over in a trade from KC this past June.
He didn't pitch a lot for us after the trade and the homers and walks were a bit worrisome.
Could be an up/down AAA to MLB shuttle guy for 2022 (two option years left).

Durbin Feltman - Turning 25 in April, but this RH reliever was pretty strong in AAA last year after coming over in a July trade.
Our scout is pretty high on him (65 potential) and I like that he has 35 stamina.
He will be added to 40 man this offseason.

We will also need to add some better relief pitchers this offseason as well.

Like the breakdown of the players. You have a mountain to climb, but should be a fun challenge. Good luck!

Lightbulb Couple of trades to announce!

The Texas Rangers have a new Shortstop!
We have completed this deal for Miguel Rojas.

Rojas is a defensive upgrade for us at SS and we were able to break even on money by getting them to send $2m in cash.
Also, we were able to add a solid defender in CF for our AAA team (in case we need one up in MLB at any time).
The two throw-ins were organization fillers guys we used to make the deal work.

Our second big trade of the day brings us a new Right Fielder and another arm for our rotation!
We have completed this trade for Max Kepler and Randy Dobnak!

David Dahl was very good for us, but he is getting more expensive and he is also fragile.
Kyle Cody is "selfish" and I would have preferred to keep Kolby Allard, but need to add him to make the deal work.

Yohel Pozo had an excellent season in AA, but he is a defensive liability and certainly not good enough defensively at catcher (45 catcher ability).

Kepler had pretty similar stats to Dahl offensively, but he is already signed for next year at $8.5m which I like.

Dobnak is signed for next four years with a team option for a fifth year.

Arrow We have added two more Starting Pitchers!

Two more trades to announce!

We have added Jonathan Loaisiga from NYY for Carlos Tocci.

I was pleasantly surprised that the Yankees were willing to part with Loaisiga and very happy with the acquisition cost.

Loaisiga turned 27 in November and comes with 3 years of team control ($1.22m for 2022).
My only concern from him is his below average stamina (45).

Tocci was expendable with the acquisition of Victor Victor Mesa.

We have added Josh Fleming from TB for Matt Thaiss.

Even though he spent almost the full year in AAA (one start in MLB), Fleming is a nice back of the rotation arm who turns 26 in May.
He has above average control (65 rating) and an excellent personality.

By trading away Matt Thaiss, this creates a spot on our roster for Sherten Apostel.

Even though we now have five decent starters (plus three guys who can be a spot starter or long man in the bullpen), we are trying to finalize a deal for another top half of our rotartion starter!

Talking We have a new Second Baseman!!!

Originally I was planning on trading Sam Huff for more SP depth, but we found this trade with Baltimore instead.

Terrin Vavra is big pickup for our team. He provides a bat for the top of our lineup, solid defensively at 2B and has the "captain" personality.

Also, we are able to pickup another depth SP option in Zac Lowther.
With two options years remaining, he may be destined for AAA if he doesn't earn a job in the bullpen.

If we can't find a trade partner for Nick Solak, he may stick with us as a DH option this year.

Thumbs up Goodbye Solak, Hello Morejon!!!

Adrian Morejon was one pitcher I considered trade Sam Huff for, but SD was willing to take Nick Solak instead!

Morejon will most likely be deployed in a relief role (spot starter when needed). Here is his player profile.

Josh Sborz would have likely lost his MLB job with the addition of Morejon anyways, so he gets included in this trade.

Also, we pick up Mason Thompson who will spend the year in AAA.
Ultimately he may end up as a reliever, but we will see how he performs in his first year in AAA.

Cool Opening Day Rosters - 2022!!!

Alright, the offseason / spring training is now behind us. Let's take a look at the 26 man roster.

Here are the 13 pitchers to start the season.

We are forcing Chris Woodward to use DeMarcus Evans as the closer to start the year.

Jonathan Hernandez and Brett Martin both only have one option year remaining.
We have 17 pitchers currently on the 40man, so four arms optioned to AAA to start the year.

Here are the 13 batters to start the season.

As tempted as we were to start Josh Jung at AAA (for service time manipulation), we really did not have anyone else to hold down the job for a few weeks.
If he struggles in April, he might go down to AAA for the month of May.

Also, we are forcing our manager to use Sherten Apostel at 1B vs LHP to give him the platoon advantage.

As we start to get more competitive, we will be looking to upgrade in LF (and possibly in CF).

Red face Team Update - 2022 June Draft!

After a decent April (11-10), we had a rough May (9-20) and are currently sitting at 21-32 (8.5 games back of the 2nd wildcard).

Here is a rundown on some of the injuries that have happened in the first two months.

On April 14th, we lost Kohei Arihara for 6 months.

The very next day we lost Zac Lowther for 5 weeks.

Today (June 4th) we learned that Jonathan Hernandez will miss the next 3 months.

Here are the stats for our current pitchers.

Michael King (acquired in a trade for Tony Kemp) has been excellent in his first 9 starts.

Adrian Morejon has also been very good and may warrant a look in the rotation in the second half (we signed him to a 1yr extension for $1.5m).

Here are the stats for our current hitters.

Max Kepler has been very disappointing so far (hurt by a BABIP of .197)

Nate Lowe had a very bad April (.511 OPS) but he is getting better as the season has gone on (.694 OPS in May).

Terrin Vavra and Miguel Rojas have had tremendous starts to the season for us.

We signed Andrew McCutchen to a MiLB deal (one of our owners goals was to acquire a former MVP) and we are platooning him in LF (optioned Steele Walker).

Exclamation Swap of OF with KC!

The Max Kepler era in Texas is over, and what a massive flop that trade has become.
David Dahl has been very good for the Twins (.844 OPS) and has remained healthy.

Welcome to the Rangers, Whit Merrifield! He will be our new RF!

Merrifield is nice having a nice season (.868 OPS) and Kepler has been awful (.544 OPS & -1.0 WAR).

Kepler was guaranteed to make $8.5m next season (his age 30 season) and Merrifield has a team option for $6.5m (he will be 34 years old in January).

Wes Benjamin (soon to be 29) is a replaceable arm from our upper minors who has one option year remaining.
The other three pieces are throw-ins to make the deal work (Charleston replaces Strahm in A+).

The assistant GM is never happy unless you're fleecing somebody.

Unhappy July 22, 2022 Team Update!

We are now sitting at 35-55, but surprisingly not lost in the AL West (poor Oakland is 30-61). This puts us in 4th last right now.

Back on June 24th, we lost Whit Merrifield to an elbow injury. He should be ready for rehab assignment in 5 days.

We also lost Andrew McCutchen for 1-2 weeks, so Davis Wendzel (former 41st overall pick in 2019) got his first MLB callup.

We had three All Star Game selections this year!
Here is a look at the year Michael King is having.

Another All Star is rookie reliever Durbin Feltman.
He has pitched in 38 games so far with an ERA of 2.06 (3.73 FIP) and a WHIP of 0.94 (2.4 BB/9).

Our third All Star is reliever Brett Martin.
He has an ERA of 1.70 at the All Star break! (He did give up a homer to Manny Machado in the ASG)

We had three of our prospects in the MLB Futures Game!
Kumar Rocker is now up in AAA and looks ready for MLB debut soon.
Maximo Acosta is tearing the cover off the ball. He started the year in the DSL and has now played in 27 games in low A (turns 20 late October).
His combined OPS for 2022 is 1.071. I am very tempted to promote him to A+ for the remainder of the season.

Nick Mikolajchak is a reliever we got as a "throw-in" to the Michael King - Tony Kemp trade.
He is having an abysmal season in AA and I do not understand why, but he made it to the Futures Game.
In 22 innings he has allowed 9 homeruns (our scout has him at 45/45 movement on 20/80 scale).
His ERA sits above 10 (8.36 FIP) and a WAR of -1.5.
I was hoping he would be ready for AAA by now (turns 25 in November).

Also, we have decided to trade Nate Lowe to the LAD. Here is the trade we ended up making.

Lowe was better in June (.762 OPS), but it felt like it was time to get value out of him before his stock plummeted.

Here is a look at Blake Rutherford. We need better production from our OF and this frees up some at bats at the DH/1B spot.

Here is a look at Jacob Amaya. We needed an infield bench bat to replace Andy Ibanez (OPS of .554 in 174 MLB PAs).
Amaya also has average OF ratings (55 range, 55 error and 50 arm), but we really like his bat more than his glove.

We are a little more than a week from trade deadline day.
Let's see if we can make some more changes and have a better second half!
