J.Unknown
Never seen this before. Im in AA and just beat up a team. I last inning they brought in a pitcher J.Unknown who turns out to be a 92 yr old SS who hasnt played in majors since 1905.
He does not appear to be on their roster at all and clicking on his name in boxscore shows no stat link.. Nice of them to give an old man a shot though. |

Obviously stays in shape, judging by his baserunning speed.
Not bad for a 92 year old. His baserunning instincts don't impress me much though. He should have learned a thing or two since he's as old as dirt. Although the fact that he's still alert and not dozing off is notable. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like he can hit a lick at this point in his career, if he ever could. My instincts tell me he probably has a little troubling catching up to the fastbal. But that's just a guess on my part. Don't want to be guilty of ageism. Jim Unknowns are created as 'ghost players' for incomplete rosters in the minor (check your league settings if you want to turn this off).

This raises a question. Is it possible to toggle AI to control rosters in the minor leagues; but not in the majors? I can see where that would be a problem to implement. Thing is, I set rosters for the MLB teams, rather than deal with the anomalies of having the AI do it (we disagree; I think I’m smarter; results do not bear this out; but I keep trying…). It’s tedious; but can work, if you’re willing to track injuries and make adjustments for non-performers. But it’s all but impossible to track rosters in the minors, and, through injuries, teams will end up short players, and thus these weird “unknowns” show up in box scores. If I could allow organizations to freely shift (and when necessary sign) players in the minors, the unknowns would presumably disappear. But toggling on AI roster control appears to change across all leagues, major and minor, in a season. I gather that’s because OOTP regards the game, and each MLB organization, as an integrated whole, which totally makes sense. I just wish I could get some help on those minor league rosters. Thoughts?

Select Manager Options
The Team Control Settings section will then allow you to set the AI to manage your minor league rosters and/or minor league signings. |

What made it off for me is that their Roster was full (26 players), including 10 pitchers. (its 1965 so 10 pitchers is the norm)
This J.Unkown does not appear on their roster or in their stats. Its as if he was magically created to face 2 batters at the end of this game. Not really created as when clicking on name its actually Charlie Babb a SS who last played in 1905. |

Joe Unknown is, as stated, a ghost player that was needed and filled in.
The odd part is it being tied to Charlie Babb in the database so as to have stats there. I wonder if it is a database glitch or if, in deciding what sort of SS the ghost player ought to look like, everyone around the conference table that day in the OOTP offices immediately thought of ol' Charlie and said "Yup. He's our "Ghost Player" shortstop template... ![]() |
