60 Years of the New York Mets

I watched the Mets Old Timer's Day even yesterday and it got me thinking that it might be fun to do a full franchise replay. I've got it set up to do historical transactions, etc. I didn't do historical lineups, so if someone looks better to the AI manager, they will play more.

It will be interesting to see if 62 will be as bad, if 69 is another miracle, if 86 can win it all without (or maybe with?) the help of Bill Buckner, etc. I'll keep it going as long as I can!!

I plan to do updates at the start of each season. Then in-season updates will depend on what is happening and what year it is. 1964, for example, will likely not get a lot of updates.....but 1973 probably will! I'll cover any playoff appearances pretty closely and then wrap things up. I'm going to try not to include much about the rest of the league....a few highlights, but that's it. That always gets me into rabbit holes I can't get out of!

1962 coming right up!

The Start Of A Franchise

April 11th, 1962....St. Louis

The New York Mets made their debut today under clear skies and close to 60 degree weather. To their detriment, the baseball gods selected Bob Gibson to be the first pitcher they would go up against as a franchise. For the Mets, Bob Miller was the man chosen to try and pitch their way to a win in their first ever game.

Miller actually pitched pretty well....giving up just 1 earned run (3 runs overall) in 7 innings. However, the bullpen gave up 4 more. Even against a Bob Gibson who walked 8 on the other side, that was too many runs. The Mets dropped their first ever game by a score of 7-2.

A few Met firsts in this game-

First hit- Single by Richie Ashburn
First run- Felix Mantilla
First RBI- Hobie Landrith
First double- Richie Ashburn
First double play- Hickman to Neal to Thomas

The Mets Get On The Board!

In real life, it was Jay Hook who got the very first win in Mets history. For this version of the Mets, they got that win one game sooner.

After an embarrassing 10-0 loss to the Pirates in the 2nd game of the year, the Mets bounced back to pick up their first ever win behind the pitching of Roger Craig. Roger wasn't great, but his 7.1 innings were good enough to get the Mets a 9-4 win.

Other than the obvious first win, there were a few other firsts in this one (none in that 10-0 disaster!)-

First triple- Jim Hickman
First HR- Ed Bouchee
First Save- Clem Labine

Break Up The Mets!!

I didn't expect another update so soon, but when a team that was historically this bad has a 3-game winning streak, that is something to report!

The Mets followed up their first ever franchise win with a 6-5 11-inning victory over the Pirates. Down a run in the 11th, Richie Ashburn came through with a 2-run double to win it. Ken Mackenzie, the only pitcher to have a winning record on the real 1962 Mets, got the win in this one.

Next up it was a one-gamer against the other new kids on the block....the Houston Colt 45s. Bob Miller took the mound again and went the whole 9 to preserve a 6-4 win over Turk Farrell and the 45s. Hobie Landrith drove in 3 of the runs.

I haven't played the next game yet.....so let's see how long this streak can last!

Do I Have The Right Year? (1962)

So the answer to my last question is......5! Yes, the 1962 Mets just ended a 5-game winning streak!! Four of those games were against the Pirates and Cardinals too!

Since the last check-in, the Mets beat St Louis in two straight, by the scores of 6-1 and 7-0. Al Jackson pitched a complete game with 9 Ks in the first game, while Roger Craig added another first with the first Mets Shut Out in the 2nd game. He gave up 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5.

Offensively, the heroes in the 6-1 game were Elio Chacon, who hit a 3-run HR off of Curt Simmons and Ed Bouchee who already hit his 3rd HR of the season (after hitting 3 in 87 AB for the real Mets that year). In the 7-0 game, it was Bouchee again, with a 2-run HR and Hobie Landrith going 3-4 with 3 RBI.

The streak ended in the most recent game against the Pirates.....Pittsburgh brough back some reality by scoring 8 off of Jay Hook in 3.2 innings en route to an 11-1 win. Elio Chacon did get the first Mets SB in that game, however.

Week of 4/22/62....What is Happening?? (1962)

The Mets just rattled off a 4-2 week, putting them at 9-5 overall and in 2nd place....just 2.5 games behind the Giants (who are on a 9 game winning streak!).

Two of the Mets win were in extra innings and they put together all 4 wins in a row....two over the Reds and one each over Pittsburgh and Philly.

The best pitched game went to Roger Craig, who improved to 3-0 with a complete game 2-1 win over Jim O'Toole and the Reds. Craig showed Ks don't matter that much as O'Toole struck out 12 in his 9 innings, while Craig didn't punch out anyone!

The most exciting game of the week was likely the next day, again against the Reds. The Mets pulled out a 10-6 win in 11 innings, as they put up 4 runs in the top of the 11th. Frank Thomas came out to play in this one, as he hit his first HR of the season and drove in 6, including a 3-run HR in that 11th inning off of Johnny Klippstein.

I wasn't around yet in 1962....but I've heard that this team wasn't that good that year....right?? (yes this is sarcasm!)

6/1/62.....Back To Normal

Towards the end of April, it looked like we had a whole different version of the Mets than what was actually seen in 1962. Now, as the month of May has just finished up, rest assured that the 62 Mets are alive and well. They currently sit at 17-25 and in 9th place in the NL. They are still 2 games ahead of the Colt 45s, so that will be a battle to see who can stay out of last. The Washington Senators over in the AL have them both beat for worst team so far, however, as they come in at 12-32.

A few roster changes occurred in the past month or so-

Additions

P Dave Hillman- purchased from the Red Sox
P Malcolm Warren- called up from the minors
3B Kevin Scarpelli- called up from the minors
P Vinegar Ben Mizell- acquired in a trade with the Pirates (sent to minors)
P Bob Miller and OF Cliff Cook- acquired in a trade with the Reds (Miller sent to minors)
OF "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry- acquired in a trade with the Orioles
P Rick Herrscher- acquired in a trade with Milwaukee (sent to minors)
P Willard Hunter- acquired in a trade with the Dodgers

Subtractions

P Herb Moford- placed on the IL
P Clem Labine- Released.....that 8+ ERA as a stopper must have done it!
1B Jim Marshall- traded to Pittsburgh
3B Don Zimmer- traded to the Reds....he finishes his Mets career with a .500 BA (1 for 2).
OF Gus Bell- traded to Milwaukee

So, for the pitching staff, the top 4 guys are all the same, but Preston Aldridge was moved out of the bullpen to the #5 slot and Bob Moorhead was sent to the pen. The rest of the bullpen looks like this now-

ST- Dave Hillman
SU- Ken MacKenzie
MR- Craig Anderson
MR- Bob Moorhead
MR- Malcolm Warren

The lineup appears unchanged against RHP, but now, against LHP, Joe Christopher has taken over for Ed Bouchee. Some other positions have changed to accommodate that, but the players remain.

A few notes in July (1962)

Didn't want to get too bogged down with the minutiae, but a few things to note here on July 28th-

- The Mets just recently had another "amazing" streak of 6 wins. They swept the Giants in a 3-game series, took a double header from the Pirates and then won another game against the Reds before losing in 10 innings to the Reds to end the streak. Overall, the Mets are currently at 44-55...8th place and 19.5 games behind the Giants. The Twins have taken over 1st in the AL by 3 games over Chicago.

- Marvelous Marv seems like he just cemented his OOTP self in the hearts of OOTP Mets fans. In the first game of a recent doubleheader with St. Louis, the Mets and Cards were tied 7-7 heading to the 10th. In came Marv to pinch hit with two men on and he hit a 3-run HR to help the mets to an eventual 11-9 victory. The legend of the Marvelous one lives on!

- Gene Woodling has been incredible since his arrival in NY. He was hitting .267 in 191 AB with the Senators. Since he came to NY, he has 159 AB and is currently hitting .352....plus he has a .429 OBP and .509 SLG!

1962 Summary

After a quick start, the 1962 Mets finished their inaugural season in 7th place overall, with a record of 71-89, 27 games behind the NL champion Giants. Compared to their real life counterparts, this Mets team had a really good year. There were some very good performances on the offensive end of things and a pitcher or two didn't do too badly either.

A few notes about the team overall-

- They had two winning months....April at 9-7 and July at 15-14.

-They were just 2 games under .500 at home, at 39-41.

- They had winning records in both 1-run and extra-inning games, at 23-21 and 12-10 respectively....that has to be pretty rare for a team whose overall record is 18 games under .500.

- They were 3rd in the NL in OBP and 1st in walks. However, they were last or 2nd to last in most pitching and defense categories....so a lot of work needs to be done there.

Pitchers

SP Roger Craig- 14-12, 3.64 ERA, 232.2 IP, 1.21 WHIP, 122 K, 3.7 WAR.....what a surprise this season was for Craig!

SP Al Jackson- 10-15, 4.49 ERA, 228.1 IP, 1.38 WHIP, 130 K, 2.5 WAR

SP Bob Miller- 9-11, 4.13 ERA, 194 IP, 1.42 WHIP, 114 K, 1.3 WAR,

SP Jay Hook- 7-11, 4.84 ERA, 191.2 IP, 1.36 WHIP, 92 K, 1.5 WAR

SP Preston Aldridge- 8-8, 1 Save, 3.66 ERA, 137.2 IP, 1.41 WHIP, 101 K, .5 WAR....Aldridge was about half and half for starts and relief appearances

ST Galen Cisco- 1-0, 3 Saves, .66 ERA, 13.2 IP, 1.24 WHIP, 11 K, .5 WAR.....Cisco was picked up on waivers from the Red Sox very late in the season, but he made a pretty immediate impact.

SU Bob Moorhead- 4-5, 7 Saves, 4.59 ERA, 104 IP, 1.52 WHIP, 56 K, -.3 WAR.....Bob made 8 starts

MR Craig Anderson- 1-4, 1 Save, 8.28 ERA, 58.2 IP, 2.15 WHIP, 35 K, -1.1 WAR....Ewwww!

MR Robert Christiansen- 4-2, 3 Saves, 5.23 ERA, 43 IP, 1.56 WHIP, 13 K, -.2 WAR

MR Ken MacKenzie- 6-7, 7 Saves, 5.17 ERA, 62.2 IP, 1.64 WHIP, 39 K, -1.2 WAR

LR- Malcolm Warren- 3-4, 6.33 ERA, 112.1 IP, 1.66 WHIP, 95 K, -.5 WAR.....Malcolm started 8 games

Those are the guys who were part of the staff at the end of the year. Other guys who contributed include-

Dave Hillman- 4-8, 6 Saves, 5.18 ERA, 33 IP, 1.76 WHIP, 18 K, -.2 WAR....went on the IL in June

Batters....top guys in order of AB

Frank Thomas- 608 AB, .268/.327/.447, 91 R, 18 D, 2 T, 29 HR, 99 RBI, 1 SB, 2.8 WAR

Elio Chacon- 598 AB, .209/.311/.291, 67 R, 17 D, 4 T, 8 HR, 51 RBI, 8 SB, .9 WAR

Felix Mantilla- 587 AB, .264/.338/.356, 78 R, 17 D, 2 T, 11 HR, 87 RBI, 5 SB, 2.2 WAR

Richie Ashburn- 573 AB, .291/.422/.407, 106 R, 15 D, 9 T, 11 HR, 63 RBI, 11 SB, 6.0 WAR.....led the league in OBP and walks with 130.

Jim Hickman- 511 AB, .225/.291/.370, 54 R, 22 D, 5 T, 14 HR, 64 RBI, 1 SB, .7 WAR

Charlie Neal- 511 AB, .266/.310/.409, 56 R, 19 D, 6 T, 14 HR, 62 RBI, 1 SB, 1.3 WAR

Gene Woodling- 364 AB, .316/.418/.467, 60 R, 15 D, 2 T, 12 HR, 61 RBI, 1 SB, 3.0 WAR....Incredible stretch from when he joined the Mets on 6/15/62

Ed Bouchee hit 10 HR and had a .355 OBP in just 277 AB.

Joe Christopher didn't get a lot of playing time until he became a more full-time player in September. For that month, he hit .274/.400/.565 with 18 R, 3 D, 5 HR, 13 RBI and 2 SB in 62 AB.

Marv Throneberry hit 3 HR and drove in 18 R in just 63 AB.

Next I'll recap things from around the league once the World Series has been played. The Series is between the Giants and Twins....and as a teaser, the Twins got there thanks to a record breaking performance by one of their top players. A pretty amazing performance considering what happened in baseball in 1961. For now, I will leave it at that!

Well, I screwed that up! Was deleting another league I had but had stopped playing and somehow deleted this one instead. Still not sure how I ended up doing it....but it happened, so I did! Probably won't restart it at this point, so I'll look for something else to get started with.

Oh, no! Don’t you have a backup of your sim? I was really enjoying hearing about the season, and looking forward to the future. I have worked on a similar 1960 season sim, managing the Phillies, who gave up too soon on veterans like Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts, and Curt Simmons. Of course, it does help knowing which rookies ultimately came through IRL. I hope you can retrieve your season and keep playing. Don’t forget to sign Seaver and Koosman, and keep Ryan and McGraw!
