I was wondering how this is decided? In my current Jets save, we finished first in division, conference and league. Won the Stanley Cup and my coach won coach of the year but I didn't win the GM award. It obviously has to do with more than just wins so does it factor in trades etc.

That one's fairly simple: primarily the improvement in points from the team's previous season, with bonuses for making the playoffs and overall playoff performance. So it'll be difficult to win if your regular-season results are always good; the real NHL award has only gone to the cup-winning GM twice in the 13 years they've given it out.
