St. Louis Cardinals -- 2025 and trying to contend

This is a carryover St. Louis Cardinals franchise from OOTP 23.
The 2024 version of the Cardinals was a vast disappointment seeing a five-year string of postseason appearances end with a 73-89 campaign which saw them finish last in the National League Central.
The team didn't do much well and in fact saw some major regressions from players, who should not yet be on the downside of their careers.
I believe the talent is still there.
Position-wise, it will be up to the players already on hand to perform to expectations.
A top of the rotation starter seems to be the biggest need.
The NL Central should be winnable -- although the Pirates and Reds have shown signs of improving -- it's yet to be seen if the Cardinals can compete with the big boys of the National League.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the hiring of Alan Zinter as their hitting coach.
He replaces Carney Lansford who was hired by the team in July.
Zinter , 56, has never worked in the majors.
The team batted .231 during hits 114 games with Lansford, 67, as hitting coach.

He replaces Edmond von Leeuwen who has retired.

Looking for the top of the rotation starting pitcher, the St. Louis Cardinals hope they have landed him by acquiring right-hander Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for RHP Jack Flaherty.
Bieber, 29, has gone 49-25 over the last three seasons for the Guardians winning a Cy Young award in 2020.
But his $28.4 million price tag through the 2027 season seemed to get to big for the former Tribe.
In Flaherty, Cleveland acquires a player who St. Louis thought might grow into an ace but has struggled with injuries and inconsistency.
Flaherty, also 29, pitched in 29 games in 2024, starting 19, and ended up 3-8 with a 7.07 ERA.
St. Louis will pay 25 percent of Flaherty's $7.5 million salary through 2027.

The St. Louis Cardinals have selected 23-year-old left-handed pitcher Julio Robaina with the eighth-picked in the first round of the Rule 5 draft.
Robaina spent the 2024 season with the Texas Rangers, where he spent time as both a starter and a reliever.
He pitched in a total of 39 games/25 starts and went 5-14 with a 5.70.
For his career, Robaina is 7-18 in 82 games/31 starts with a 5.92 ERA.
The Cardinals are expected to use Robaina as a relief pitcher.

The St. Louis Cardinals have completed a trade with the Colorado Rockies acquiring 29-year-old outfielder Luis Gonzalez in exchange for right-handed starting pitcher Jake Woodford and catcher Julio Rodriguez.
Gonzalez played 149 games/143 starter for the Rockies in 2024, batting .256 with 11 homers and 82 RBIs.
Woodford, 28, made 10 starts in the majors for St. Louis last season going 4-2 with a 5.70 ERA.
For his career, Woodford is 8-0 in 84 games/29 starts against major league competition with a 4.05 ERA.
Rodriguez, 27, has been the Cardinals backup catcher for most of the past two seasons.
In 2024, he played in 35 games/31 starts in the majors hitting .139 with one homer and nine RBIs.
He was much better in 2023, when he hit .226 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs in 81 games/78 starts.
