Update the Glossary, please?

Thanks for all the new, fun, and trendy stats like SD/MD (shutdowns and meltdowns) and SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA). Too bad these, and many, many other stats, are not defined in your Glossary. Sure, I can look it up elsewhere, but if you are going to provide this service (the Glossary is still the last item on the online manual menu), then it should be updated accordingly.

Side question to the community: Failing OOTPD complying with this request, what is your favorite source for a dictionary-like source of baseball stat definitions, including all the latest? Please bear in mind, I am not looking for a lengthy discussion such as this, but a list of quick, at-a-glance definitions.

MLB.com's Glossary page. I don't see Shutdowns/Meltdowns listed, but they have most, if not all, of the rest and are generally straight to the point.

MLB's glossary page is pretty good and covers most of what you need. For the more advanced stuff like SD/MD, I use Fangraphs library (https://library.fangraphs.com/) and BR's glossary (https://www.baseball-reference.com/about/). Both have advantages and comparing all three sources can make for some interesting thoughts.

Thanks for the responses. FanGraphs is TMI. Baseball Reference is strange; see for yourself by clicking, for example, on "Pitching Glossary." Nothing is defined; they merely state how their tooltips work which is not what I am looking for. MLB's glossary is more like it but doesn't even come near the comprehensiveness demanded by OOTPB.

The folks over at MLB would probably scratch their own heads over "pLi" (defined by OOTPB's popup as "Average Leverage.") Google's top search return for "pLi" is "Practising Law Institute."

Respectfully, if OOTPB is going to include these arcane stats, OOTPD ought to update its own glossary with them.

Leverage index is usually just "LI" so that's why you're not getting any results for it. I assume the "p" is supposed to mean "pitching", but I've never seen it referred to that way.

Oh... hey, it's just me over here in the corner still banging my drum about a game definition for "Adaptability".

I have made a good guess at what it really means inside OOTP, but would like to know the real answer. Perhaps one of these days.

I will use your post as a segue to a clarification. I am not asking OOTPD to precisely define their formulae. I gave up that battle long ago, with VORP. These days, I take WAR at face value as long as I respect the source and use only that source for player comparison. This works fine within the confines of OOTPB.

Consider this definition:

Name: Image2291.jpg
Views: 390
Size: 174.6 KB

For example, nobody should expect OOTPD to come out and declare what their FIP constant is; it would lead to unnecessary debate and rancor, especially if they felt the need to change it once in a while.

What I am looking for is what MLB provided in that definition; a general idea for each stat without getting into the specifics in each and every aspect.

Oh, I agree completely Bru. I am not interested in "Min-Maxing" anything. Nor am I interested in the guts of what makes OOTP tick.

But it would be nice to know even the most basic of definitions for terms like "adaptability". I could assume it means a player's ease at taking on multiple positions or starter vs. bullpen, but that's just a shot in the dark.

Probably somewhat close, but I'd like to at least know if I am in the proverbial ballpark on whether to even pay attention to this attribute or not. Essentially, if they put it in the game, then do it right and let us know why it is in the game.
Color me frustrated.

I've always seen it as a players ability to play well in various roles and positions, but also their willingness to play those roles even if it isn't his expected role, i.e. a player batting 8th in the lineup when his expectation is batting cleanup, coming off the bench when his expectation is in the starting lineup, etc.

That's a good take on it, thanks.

Yeah honestly the personality related stuff should be both expanded upon a bit more and explained better. The actual stats are out there to find; I think with SD, MD, and leverage index those come mainly from FanGraphs as opposed to BBRef (although the latter does have lists of high/medium/low leverage outings per reliever - I know this because I built my own starter/reliever stat dumps off of BBRef pages). But, like, I feel like I’m flying a little blind with some of the personality ratings.

I also think, as an aside, that my own experience with relationships is that winning matters waaay too much, like if you can consistently win 90 games you will have very few if any bad clubhouse situations (conversely, if your team is a 90 game loser, any and all minor issues will flare up, although to be honest I like that aspect). Good teams still find themselves having to deal with clubhouse cancers or players who are big mad that they aren’t starting every day. Some players, sure, will go with the flow if things are going well, but not everyone.
