Schedule Creation Tutorial

Is there any type of tutorial available to teach schedule making/creation?

I have decided it’s very difficult to try to create real world leagues without the proper schedules. Some rules and rosters aren’t made for everyday play (think European weekend leagues) and consequently it’s very necessary to have schedules that go along with this. (Two man rotations for example).

Mod makers don’t seem interested in doing these types of things, and generally only seem interested in doing fictional schedules, so if I want to accomplish real-world league creations, I’m going to have to learn how to put schedules together…not very easy from what I gather.

Have you read gmo's "Making Baseball Schedules" blog? It's linked in his signature. It might be helpful.

I think they are relatively easy to make in excel. I don't really patrol the schedules forum, but i'm happy to help if you have a request.

For simplicity sake I am doing a Belgium League schedule with 6 teams in two divisions. The tricky part is the games are on the weekends like most other European Leagues. There are only 40 games in the season.

Unfortunately, I'm really a total novice when it comes to schedules & schedule making. I would have thought there might be a schedule "template" for something like this, but I don't see anything in the schedules folder that would have me think this is true. Does OOTP automatically detect schedules that work with any given league?

If it's just a matter of converting a published schedule into OOTP format, I can do that for you. Just post the file or send it to me in a PM.

kind of. It detects schedules based on your league settings (# of games, sub leagues, divisions, teams, series length, interleague, balanced/un-balanced).

If you want something specific like games only on weekends, you need to import it manually. The thing is, OOTP actually does a decent job with the schedule generator, but only for tournaments for some reason.

If there's a specific schedule I want, I have to make it myself. It's fairly easy once you know what you're doing. I'm happy to help

A schedule is a jigsaw puzzle. The more teams, more games, and more parameters it has, the more complicated the puzzle.

Your setup — 12 teams, 40 games — is a far simpler puzzle than MLB's 30 teams and 162 games. So even a rookie at it should be able to construct it with a bit of work. Note that if you work in series instead of individual games, it does simplify the puzzle as it lowers the number of elements you have to deal with.

Making schedules is a multiple step process, but there is a structure that makes it understandable.

Basically you need to define the various matchups and how many games for each one, then shuffle them around. I actually create worksheets in text files to assist in this.

I've attached a worksheet I made for an 8-team, 140-game schedule and added some comments so hopefully it makes a bit of sense.

Schedules with odd numbers of teams in a division are possible as well, but more involved. Still doable with the same process, though

Thank you..I will look this over for sure. Always good to see examples of how things are done.

Feel free to ask questions! A lot of the knowledge of this process is in my head and I'm unconvinced that my comments are sufficient.
