Fielding experience accumulation rate

How many defensive innings to go from 0-200? I know that there are variables blah blah blah, but across-the-board-in-general what are we talkin' about?

...it depends

This is fairly easy to test. I created a new league, turned off all variables, reduced a players from one team to all 0's in position experience. I locked them to their positions for a full 162 games.

Here is their growth for a full season:

Catcher: 0 to 68
1B: 0 to 200
2B: 0 to 186
3B: 0 to 185
SS: 0 to 198
LF: 0 to 184
CF: 0 to 200
RF: 0 to 200

Not surprisingly, Catcher takes a very long time to fill out, where the other positions take around a season

Very appreciative of this!

Also though experience is accelerated in spring training. IME you can get somewhere around half a season's worth of experience by starting a guy at a given position the entire run of ST.

I still play OOTP 22, but I used to track how the position experience was accumulated.

First, position experience accumulates VERY fast from 0-50 for a given position. It accumulates relatively quickly from 50 to 150. It accumulates rather slowly from 151 to 200.

Position experience evaporates much quicker if experience is below 50. It seems to evaporate a little quicker between 50 and 150 than for a rating > 150. Primary position seems to not be subject to evaporation as easily.

Rate of gain seems to be widely variable depending on the player. Some players will gain experience nearly every day. Others gain only every 3rd or 4th day when over 150. Intelligence or adaptability may be involved here but doesn't seem to be completely correlated.

Starting a game at a position and playing 3 innings seems to be all that is necessary to get position experience. I don't think I have seen a player gain experience at more than one position in a game. Playing 3 innings can get you position experience for a substitute but seems less likely than a starter. Very rarely have I seen gains when a player plays less than 3 innings in a game.

All of this is pretty well modeled and was substantially improved from older versions of OOTP where assigning a player to a position in the line up card gave you experience.
