Steam Key Two Player League Possible?

If I get the Steam Key game can I still have a two player league with a friend? Would they need to have the game on Steam as well? Or could they have the PC version of the game?

I actually prefer to play my games on Steam when possible but if it's not possible to still access the league features then I would get the PC version.

The game itself is no different regardless of the platform so you would be able to do a league with someone who purchased it to Fastspring even if you have it on Steam.
