Would You Stick With A Winning Pitcher....
but he has bad stats overall? Apela has done well for me as my #5 last season. He won 4 games in relief last year before becoming the starter. This season, he is my #3 despite being a 4/5 inning guy. He doesn't make much but I am thinking about getting rid of him. Would you?

No way to answer this in isolation. Depends on--at least--the strength of your bullpen and the guy who would become your new #5. Maybe other things too.
I had a guy with excellent ratings and good performance in AA though little stamina, so he would never be good for more than 4-5 innings. But I had a deep bullpen so I brought him up and started him. He didn't do well; after 3? 4? starts he had earned a "cold" symbol. Since his ratings were much better than my alternative, I just kept starting him even though for 4 more starts he got in trouble between the 1st and the 3rd and I had to pull him. I had to pull him between the 1st and the 3rd. Finally he got a quality start, lost the "cold," and has since delivered 5 good starts in a row. Now he's "hot." Obviously this was only possible because of that bullpen. Even then I make no claim that it was the right choice. As far as I can tell, my team's record did not suffer net damage from this, but obviously I don't know that. |
