How does the game determine positions?
How does the game determine the position when players are created?
Attached is a player who is rated very good at 1B, and below average at two OF positions. The game determined when the player was new that the player should be a LF. When the player was created, he was rated with the high 1B rating. I would have thought when the player was created, he should be a 1B because of his high 1B rating. |

From what I've seen in the past, a player's position is dictated by the AI manager's tendencies and/or preferred lineup, which is often influenced by the makeup of the current roster he's on. If he's the best option at 1B, then the AI mgr will assign him there, and so forth.

A 40 RF has a marginally better defensive WAR than a 55 1B. They're both negative, but the RF is about .06 better for what it's worth.

Answering my own question, maybe.....Does the game look at the fielding experience and that determines what is the default position? In this example, the player is a CF by default (173). His position ratings have him as a much better LF.

Listed position is effectively cosmetic, it will change to whatever position they're currently being played at.
