How to avoid overwriting defunct teams and leagues?

I'm trying to create a world baseball tournament in a save that already has 50+ years of history. The problem that I am running into is that the tournament teams are assuming the Team IDs of a few defunct teams in the save, overwriting their history.

How do I stop this from happening?

Are you deleting the old teams and the game is re-using their IDs?

If that is the case, then create a "defunct" league for those teams (with a schedule of 0 games) and then transfer the defunct teams into that league without deleting them.

Yes, the game is re-using their IDs after I delete them. What is interesting is that I already created two leagues that did not re-use the IDs, so I am wondering what causes it.

If I have already deleted the teams, can I resurrect them in that "defunct league" with the same names? Would this map the same ID?

I don't think so, sorry.

A fix that I seem to have found is to create whatever new leagues and teams you want to create through the league functions tool of another league in the world.

For instance, I've created a development league through my major league in this save, and it generated all new team IDs. After this point I can edit the setting in the league to be a world baseball tournament.

Nevermind, this only works if you keep the templated league the same size; you cannot add teams to it. Maybe this would work if you created the bigger prospect league and subtracted teams

The final solution seems to be that if you create a league using the tools of a pre-existing one, you are able to preserve past Team IDs. A bit of a hassle, but if you want to keep the records of a defunct rival league or folded clubs, this is a possible way to do it.

That's interesting because I would have assumed that generated team IDs are global across leagues.

The more you know!
