There are no unwritten rules in OOTP baseball
I was just examining the box score of a ludicrous 27-0 beatdown and saw that we scored 13 runs in the bottom of the 8th.
We really piled it on despite being up 14 runs with one inning to go. All 13 runs, including a grand slam, came against 3 different position players assigned to relieve their pitchers of one inning of work. BRUTAL. |

I have always felt that in any sport, it is up to the other team to prevent you from scoring. A long time ago the Red Sox were playing the Devil Rays. The Sox were up big (I can't remember the exact score). Late in the game, the Red Sox scored a run on a Sac Fly. Joe Maddon made a big deal after the game, calling out Jimy Williams for sending the runner, unwritten rules, etc. The next night sox are up by a few runs in the 8th, this time, the runner holds on a fly ball. Tampa comes back and wins by 1 run.

Once your up by 10+ runs I can understand being more conservative on the basepaths, don't steal and such but otherwise hit away.

I won't steal if they promise not to hit homeruns.

I'm pretty tired of grown-ass men, many of whom make millions of dollars per year, complaining about their opponents running up the score. How is this not a joke? Why do we take this seriously?

It boggles my mind that we coddle professional pitchers with pitch counts to protect their arms but seem perfectly willing to damage the arms of position players in a game that is already lost. Last edited by uruguru; 01-19-2025 at 12:09 PM. |

I don’t mean to be pedantic, but if the rule isn’t written down, it isn’t really a rule that has to be enforced, is it?

I agree that the other team needs to stop you.
However if i was a manager and my team is up by 15 runs i might consider taking some starters out. Sure players can get hurt at any time but why risk if you don't have too? Plus give more playing time to players that need the extra playing time. I wouldn't take all of the starters out at once. Because sometimes a rally could start and then you have to use pitchers you didn't want to use. Like the Cubs blowing game 4 of the 1929 World Series. I would also consider keeping starters in that were going for records. Anyway i would not let up to protect the opponent but only if it served my team's interest. |

Several years ago, I had a series where I was playing the real-life Mariners against the Rangers. The Rangers had just lost a couple starters to injury and called up minor leaguers to fill the rotation.
All three games ended up being 20+run affairs, with position players pitching late in all three. |

I always adjust my team strategy to reduce stolen bases and base running to extremely conservative with a large lead in the late innings. Of course, that doesn't mean the AI is doing the same thing. But with devs interested in replicating actual baseball, you think they would be inclined to make that a high likelihood with most of the AI managers. Though once when I was getting thumped by double digits in the 9th and the runner stole 2nd base, I intentionally plunked the next batter. That was me enforcing my unwritten rule.

Replacing front-liners with bench players is the right action for the losing team, but I doubt the A.I. in OOTP is designed to do the same. Might be something to consider thou for the sake of reality.
