Scouting in OOTP
Hi all, so I have my scouting budget on 27 million. I have a legendary scout in everythiing, 10% MLB, 10% ML, 40% amateur draft, 40% international.
Does it even matter what I do? all my amateurs for the draft are only scouted till average. international finds are bad and even IFA all the prospects are at average. This is really strange since I have the biggest budget, the best scout and almost all my money is dedicated to the draft and international findings. I have a strong feeling the scouting is broken. Is this correct? Do I need to turn the money down since it probably doesnt matter if I have 27 million or 9 million in scouting. BTW I play with scouting combine but thinking of turning it off. Would it matter? Last edited by Tootski; 06-23-2025 at 12:01 PM. |

I think it works a little smoother with combine turned off. I do believe is by design that there is variation between the best scouts can do and a player’s actual potential… and that variation is much greater the more distance there is between a player and the majors, which is why there’s an accuracy cap on amateurs.
For me personally, I try to have a strategy going into each draft or international amateur signing and evaluate, refine, and or try new strategies as seasons roll along. You’ll always have busts (especially if you’re winning and consistently drafting near the end of the first round), so I try not to get too emotionally attached to particular signings. I have my scouting budget set max, but customize so I just have a splash allocated towards amateur and international scouting, minors scouting at 50%, and rest for majors scouting. I don’t mind missing on prospects, because there will be late round picks that outperform their amateur assessments (I had a 20th round pick emerge as a HOF closer once)… the important thing is that minors scouting, because that’s how you can identify busts while they still have trade value, identity players that will never make it past A ball so you can clear them out to avoid a choke point in progression, and to identify guys that will make it to the majors as marginal players to trade for younger prospects that are young enough to have the time to possibly develop in your system. International Amateurs, unless a guy is a unicorn, I generally prefer getting a lot of cheap 2.5 - 3.5 star players in hopes one or two will outperform expectations rather than put it all in on a very good prospect that might bust. Amateur scouting doesn't revert or improve with the Combine off (as I wish it did). Needs a patch.. needs a patch.
