OOTP 27 Single Folder (External HDD)
Hello!
I want to purchase OOTP27 but I want it to run completely off an external drive. Is this possible? If so, HOW do I purchase/install it like this? I want to be able to use the application on more than one PC. The issue I am thinking is going to happen here is...when i plug the drive into other computers...the drive letter may or may not be the same each time. It may be D or E depending on the computer being used. Will this be an issue? Thanks! Last edited by roastincoffee; 04-10-2026 at 08:43 PM. |

I wouldn't recommend running off an external hard drive--the game really isn't much of a space hog. However, it should work fine.
1. Purchase on Steam 2. Set one of your Steam directories to the XHD 3. Install the game to that directory You may need to look up how to change your Steam directory from the default as I recall that setting being slightly hidden. |

Not a space issue...it's a matter of flexibility. |

The direct purchase and using the single folder download option is likely the best option if you're concerned about drive letters changing.
You could also do the direct purchase and install on both machines with the data folder pointed toward the external drive, but you'd have to ensure that the drive letter is the same each time you plug it in to that specific machine. |

It should work. You might need to take some steps to cut down on facegen, report generation, etc. |

Then download the single-folder installer and use that (as the other folks above have suggested). I've done this myself on multiple computers before and haven't noticed any issues. The drive letters changing shouldn't matter.

I think as long as you're connecting an external ssd to port with decent transfer speed you'd be fine performance wise. Not as good as an internal ssd, but would still be considerably faster than an internal mechanical drive.
You could manually assign a drive letter to the external on each machine, that would give you a fighting chance of always getting the same letter again in the future. I used to use 'Z' for an external drive that bounced around between machines where I used an old backup program with a batch file pointed to it. Every so often Winblows would "forget" that device though and assign the first available letter again. Last edited by snepp; 04-13-2026 at 12:25 PM. |
