Fairly common knowledge. Lots of people into geneaology here. Almost everyone knows where their ancestors came from so it just follows that everyone keeps tabs on who settled what, etc.

I wouldn't call it common knowledge, no. It might be common knowledge among the segment of the population that is fairly well educated and has roots going back at least a generation or two, so that they care enough to know/remember.

I think it works. Something that is explainable as being tied to the city would work well.

Not Birmingham in general but the team could be from Birmingham and be called the Alabama Slammers

Just have to drink Southern Comfort while you play out the games

I used the team name in a fictional league once with teams based only in Alabama. It was fun for a couple of seasons. . .
