HG373 looks like Don Blasingame, who played with the Giants in the late 50's

When I first stumbled across him - and JD McCarthy also shot him - Markham stumped me for awhile. Played briefly in the Giants' system and his entire experience with the Astros was spring training 1966.

A fascinating piece in the November Hunt Auction - a 22" by 25" display of photos of the Washington American League team: 20 small portraits to the waist, in ovals, one large center portrait marked "1904."

1904 would be a good guess - that big picture in the middle looks like Patsy Donovan, the underrated 17-year outfielder who managed the Washington's from May 11, 1904 through the end of the season - and the catcher in the second row, second from the right, sure looks like the equally superannuated Malachi Kittridge (who started the season as player-manager). Right above him would seem to be fellow catcher Boileryard Clarke, who was in Washington from 1901 through 1904.

The problem is the uniforms.

Those ones with the ornate, almost spiked "W's" (top row, upper left) can date only to the 1903 season, but from the franchise's start, the serifed thick block letter "W" unis were, per Okkonen's authoritative guide on the subject, only worn in the road uniforms of 1905 and 1911- and not again until 1938 (there is a block letter "W" home uniform from 1902, but it's sans serif, and worn over an outlined chest pocket no less).

Just to ratchet up the mystery, of course - no ID's. Happy Hunting.

All of the players were on the Washington roster at some time during the 1904 season. Most of the photos in the composite had been published in the Washington Times in 1903 and 1904. Most were uncredited, but the image of Case Patten in the composite is an excerpt from the team photo seen on page 8 of the April 22, 1903, edition of the Washington Times, and that image is indicated as having been copyrighted by Frank Cullen. The players in the composite include some who began the 1904 season with the Senators but were traded away during the season, as well as players who began with other teams and then came to the Senators. For example, Charlie Moran was traded for Hunter Hill and Frank Huelsman on July 14th, yet Moran, Hill, and possibly Huelsman all appear in the composite.

Question marks in my identifications below indicate when a matching photo could not be found in the Times archived at Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/se...ges/results/ ) thus these are uncertain.

Top Row (L-R): Charlie Moran (SS), Bill Wolfe (P), Case Patten (P), Beany Jacobson (P), Bill Clarke (C/1B), Joe Cassidy (SS).
Second Row (L-R): Bill (John) O'Neill (CF), Happy Townsend (P), Mal Kittridge (C), Frank Huelsman (CF)?.
Center: Patsy Donovan (RF/Mgr.).
Third Row (L-R): Kip Selbach (LF), Tom Hughes (P), Lew Drill (C)?, Barry McCormick (2B).
Bottom Row (L-R): Hunter Hill (3B), Highball (Howard) Wilson (P), Davey Dunkle (P)?, Al Orth (P/LF/CF), Bill Coughlin (3B), Jake Stahl (1B).

A moment of glory for Satriano & Burdette

Maybe there weren't too many career highlights for Tom Satriano, but here's a memorable one:
On July 22, 1966 while with the Angels, Satriano hit a ninth inning, bases-clearing, go-ahead triple that the stadium barely contained, to nail down
then-Angels relief pitcher, Lou Burdette's 200th career win. Burdette reaching 200 wins was never a given and in fact he had been released by the Phillies the previous winter with his career victory total stalled at 195. With a good year for the Angels in '66 (7-2), working out of the bullpen, Burdette barely reached the milestone, finishing his career a year later at age 40, with a final tally of 203-144. Perhaps fittingly, Burdette's 200th win came at Yankee Stadium against the team he had tormented 9 years earlier by going 3-0 for the Milwaukee Braves, with 2 shut outs and 3 complete games, including a shut out in the decisive seventh game of the 1957 World Series.
Given a 6-4 lead by Satriano's blast entering the bottom of the 9th, Burdette finished off the Yankees in order, getting Horace Clarke to hit a harmless fly ball to center fielder, Jose Cardenal for the final out, to complete his 200th win..
Burdette's 200th win would not have happened, or at least it would have been delayed if not for Satriano's clutch hitting that night.

Hal Schacker (April 1925-October 2015)

Hal Schacker was a 20-year-old wartime, righthanded relief pitcher for the Boston Braves for a number of games in May and June of 1945. He passed away at age 90 on October 2, but his death wasn't immediately reported.
Are there any photos of him?

The only one I have is from his 2003 Jewish Major Leaguers card. I believe he is also shown in the attached 1944 Hartford Laurels team picture but I do not have IDs for the photo.

He never wore this uniform for the Phillies, but here is this short-term reliever in Spring Training 1971.

As shortstop for the 1976 Giants, with whom he spent only about two thirds of that season.

Mike Patterson 1981

Didn't have a clue who this was when Topps uploaded him but the auction has gone live and it is very brief A's (1981) and Yankees (1981-82) outfielder Mike Patterson. The only color image I've seen of him previously is on a Fleer Gum proof card where he's misidentified as Gil Patterson.

Well, you have seen at least one other color image of Mike (albeit not of Vault quality), since I posted one earlier this year and you were among those who clicked the "thanks" button.

promising career was short by illness.
He had 2 excellent years with the Cincinnati

Greengrass in the Vault

There was no 1957 Topps card of Jim Greengrass. This was taken during the 1956 season, TV image GH567. Can someone color correct it?

This was a tough one and I'm not sure I'm happy with the result. I might play with it some more in the morning.
