Bill Dillman - Expos

I just happened to be looking for Mr. Dillman last night, so I know there was a request for him as an Expo earlier this year that was answered with an OK, but shadow heavy image (Brace?), so here's the Vault's finest for Montreal Bill.

Two new Phillies Nongenarians: Miller & Mmorgan

Bob Miller and Bobby Morgan, two 1950s Phillies each turned 90 in June.
Miller a righthanded pitcher made a strong contribution to The Whiz Kids N.L pennant drive of 1950. He went 11-6 that year and finished second to the Braves' Sam Jethroe in that year's N.L. Rookie of the Year voting.
Miller spent all or parts of 10 seasons with the Phillies 1949-1958, his only major leagues team. and turned 90 on June 16th.
Bobby Morgan could play SS, 2B and 3B and was primarily a utility infielder in his 9 year major league career (1950-1958). Morgan was a Phillie from 1954 to1957 and enjoyed more playing time with them than any other team. As their everyday shortstop in 1954 Morgan had career highs of a .263 batting average and 14 home runs. He turned 90 yesterday on June 29.
They join six other Phillies players who are in their 90s: Wally Westlake 95, Solly Hemus 93, Bob Kuzava 93, Chuck Harmon 92, Bobby Shantz 90 yrs., 9 months and Dick Koecher 90 years, 3 months.

New Folder (JJ) Discovered

The discovery this week of an unpublished Topps Vault folder has had several veteran collectors searching their hard drives for missing numbers. One of the true stars here, keonleafs, not only found 22 missing images from the TT file, he found another (Folder JJ) that has not been posted.

Another early generation file, as the images carry no watermark, but fit right in with the Vault. In fact, a couple of the images might be unique for the Vault (so far). The file has been passed along to Baseball-Birthdays to include in the OneDrive archive.

Checklist so far:

210 Dick Phillips; 211-212 Marty Perez; 213 Jerry Perkins (Mets minor leaguer); 214-215 Ron Perranoski; 216-219 Cap Peterson; 220-223 Fritz Peterson; 224 Rich Peterson; 225-228 Adolfo Phillips

259 Mike Andrews; 260 Chris Arnold; 261 Earl Averill; 262 Marv Breeding; 263 Joe Amalfitano; 264 Ken Brett; 265 Jim Brewer; 266 Marshall Bridges (Senators); 267 Johnny Briggs.

Bobby Gene Smith (1934 - 2015)

Just learned today that Bobby Gene Smith passed away on November 24, 2015. Bobby signed with the Cardinals in 1953 and played through 1967, including parts of 7 seasons in the majors. And, of course, he was an original Met, though not for long (traded to the Cubs April 26, 1962). His last major league action came with the Angels in 1965.

Lots of good images of Bobby on the site, here (use the search feature) and many (some good, some not so much) in the Vault. I'm only including this Cubs image (a current eBay offering of legendsandmoreinc) and the Cardinal image (from this condolences page) because they're not already posted elsewhere on the site (so far as I can tell).

..... 213 ?? Keonleafs theorizes that it's Mets minor league LHP Jerry Perkins, MadJack not yet able to confirm; .....
.
For those working to determine whether JJ 213 is Jerry Perkins, here is the only photo I have of this pitcher. It is from historic-images. I found it about a year ago.

Jerry Perkins was a non-roster invitee with the Mets in 1972.

Bobby was quite renowned for his outfield play.

Nick goulish

While far from perfect, here are a couple of pics of Goulish (love the name!) from the 1944 Utica newspaper that I believe represent an improvement over what has been circulating.

Nick Goulish 1944

Here are a couple more Goulish photos. The one showing him eating a meal is from the Wilmington (DE) News Journal of March 14, 1945. The one depicting him in a Phillies uniform is from the Salem (OH) News of June 20, 1958. He was in Salem conducting a baseball clinic with George Shuba at the time.

Missing Player Walter Coleman 1895 St. Louis Brown Stockings

Woodcut of Walter Coleman who pitched 1 game for the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1895.

The woodcut appeared in the April 18, 1897 St. Joseph (MO) Sunday Herald. He was with the team from April to May 1897. He is mistakenly called John Coleman in the woodcut, but the biographical description in the article matches Walter Coleman's. I also have documentation of his release by St. Joseph in May 1897 from a local paper that frequently featured Coleman's exploits.

Missing Player Dennis Berran 1912 Chicago White Sox

Dennis Berran (mistakenly called Beran) who played for the 1912 Chicago White Sox as featured in a team photo in the September 5, 1913 Brattleboro (VT) Daily Reformer. It was an independent team he played for that year.

I located a photo of Burley Bayer who played 1 game for the 1899 Louisville Colonels.

He lived in Louisville his whole life and player semipro baseball for the Goss Brothers team in the early 1900's, as per his SABR bio: Burley Bayer | Society for American Baseball Research

He is featured in a team photo that appeared in the February 1, 1903 Louisville Courier Journal.
