Update on Darryl Strawberry these days. He's looking and doing rather well.

Darryl Strawberry Is Not Trying to Save You

But if you want to hear what he has learned about lost promise and the prison of yearning, ask him. He’ll talk to anybody.

Gary mentioned something interesting in their 7-4 loss yesterday, that if the Mets finish in the bottom six, they can keep their draft pick, while otherwise, because their payroll exceeds the GDP of North Korea, they would drop 10 spots in the draft.

So that's why Pete isn't batting fourth again?
Bill James made a case of hitting your hitters in OPS order. Can't see anything wrong with that.

That's the old Bobby Bragan strategy. It dates back to the 1950s.

(Of course Bragan didn't know about OPS, so he would just put his "best hitters" at the top, but it was the same concept.)

Chuck Tanner had Dick Allen hitting leadoff for a few years with the White Sox, IIRC.

24-5 runs in three games against the Cards with one to spare. So that's how the Barves must feel when they play the Long Island Billionaires.

I loved this story. Not the boneheadedness, but the aftermath. It's so Petey! I really like this guy. (Click on article for larger view.)

According to a Brewers official quoted anonymously in The Athletic report, the teams were within “field-goal range” of completing a deal that would have sent Alonso to Milwaukee for a package including at least one of the Brewers’ top-five prospects.

Why is it always Milwaukee? (cf the Flores/Wheeler for Carlos Gomez non-deal of 2015)

This makes me rather worried that there's A Reason why Polar Bear hasn't signed a long-term lease on his hibernation cave…

I just read an article about Pete's response after learning about that trade rumor. Typical good-natured Pete.

Listen, if you guys are too dumb to keep him (not you personally, of course), then send him across town.

The saving grace is that it was a curve ball, although I agree with you in that Soriano will soon be out of the league if he can't throw it better consistently. You want it curving toward the plate or a little outside, not downward at the guy's head.

I like that the Mets scratched out a win with the kind support of Reynaldo Lopez in the ninth inning, but I am kinda bummed Shohei Ohtani went zilch with a bundle of strikeouts - and against David Peterson!

Cookie Crumbles Waived.

Also, I flicked on the SNY SportsNite show last night, and found that Quintana had kept the Buccos off the board for 6, before getting pulled and watching the pen blow the game. This prompted AnchorBabe to praise Quintana as "an innings-eater"

And y'all wonder why I quit watching?

I remember a time when Aroldis Chapman had more to offer than being saddled with a fake bogus runner and an intentional walk, and then just walking a hacker and plonking 2023's Johneshwy Fargas.

Disclaimer: Chapman pitched the fourth of five consecutive days. The Mets were no better at pitching in the 2 1/2 innings I saw after waking up.

The 3-2-4 inning-ender in the top 10th was sweet though.

Just for you, Gary said that Cookie Crumbles was in the bullpen tonight "in case Denyi Reyes went short, which he didn't". 5 1/3. (shrugs)

My 1971 Sporting News Guide tells me, IIRC, that some team in the Mexican League hurled a perfect game, splitting the duties between three pitchers: one trip through the lineup, apiece.

Who knew that Mexico knew the future?

Probably labor laws. Each pitcher ran up on his mandatory 3-hour siesta after three innings.

Meat Loaf sang "two out of three ain't bad", which bodes well for the Rangers.

Unfortunately I can't tell how much flash is left in D.J. Stewart's pan. But Pete hasn't popped one in a while, he's due one of those two bombs, five ribs games.
