WOODCUT LOCATED: Leander "Dan" Abbott 1890 Toledo
Found a woodcut of the highly touted and short tenured pitcher Leander "Dan" Abbott, who came to Toledo with high hopes after winning 30+ games for Saginaw in 1889. His likeness appears in the January 18, 1890 Toledo Blade,

The Hall received the actual Temple Cup as a gift circa 1940. When last seen it was on a storage shelf, next to a Beer Vendors' tray from Arlington Stadium in the '80s, and not expected to again be publicly displayed. |

I noticed in their colgan's chips wall section, they did not have the Tully Sparks one which i do have. Not sure why since i dont think its exactly rare, but idk if theyd accept it, plus theyd probably have already got one by the time im dead, but thats really a shame that a lot of it ends up like that. I know they have a pretty big shop of pre owned t206 cards and cards from that era since i bought a few during my last trip there (pretty overpriced even for being from 1909 but everything in cooperstown is), so i dont see why they dont just do that with all their donations rather than just dumping them into storage to rot. i didnt see any 1880s cards in the shops which i am surprised about since im sure a lot of people would donate, and as for the temple cup.... thats just disgraceful

You're aware that the memorabilia stores in the streets near the Hall of Fame are independent businesses, right? They have no connection to the Hall itself?
They also keep no records of what baseball cards they do and do not have. One of the archivists asked me to go through their Old Judge cards - which were in a drawer in a small file cabinet, loose - in 2009. Among them was the card of Athletics catcher Whitey Gibson. To that point two copies of the card were known: one in my collection, and one in another OJ collector's collection. They had an unknown third copy. I suggested they auction it and buy a lot of common cards and they said they don't BUY things. The Gibson is still in the drawer. |

the point i was trying to make is why dont they just give the stuff to the stores that they arent using since theyre like right there? and if the stores dont want to buy them then the hall could just auction them off themselves. i dont understand why it is the way it is becuase i can name a million better ways to prevent this type of stuff from happening, heck, i'll drive up there right now and take it all free of charge happily if they dont want it

I think you misunderstand what the Hall of Fame is. It's a private for-profit company. While almost 100% of the people who work there love the game and especially its history, the owners would turn it into the Cabbage Hall of Fame tomorrow if that would make more money.
They do NOT buy anything and they do NOT sell anything and they certainly do not give anything away. It always makes me sad when you see players giving away their game-used stuff for "exhibition" there knowing that almost all of it will go into storage, if not immediately then within weeks. |

Then why don't they just refuse donations? I'm saying it would help them if they did sell some of the stuff to the stores around them since it'd really help both the hall and the store owners as well as not letting that stuff go to waste. I doubt it'll happen but it seems illogical that it's ran thay way. That way the hall would get more money from that, the owners of the shops could get new items and some money off of selling them and none of the stuff would be wasted. It seems like a triple win situation to me.

You're not following this.
The owners of the Hall of Fame are only interested in THEIR profits. They don't give a damn about the store owners, or you, or the players, or the memorabilia. |

I can vouch for this. They have little interest in baseball history. I know more about their holdings than they do.

i dont think you understand, im saying, it can help the hall's too, if they sell this stuff rather than letting it rot in a basement, they can make money too is my point so i dont see why they dont do it.

I'm saying the hall can make a quick buck by selling this stuff off to the stores. I was just pointing out that both parties could potentially benefit from it and stuff wouldnt become lost.

Al Tesch 1915
Here's another option for brief Federal League player Tesch. He was pictured here trying to make the 1915 Kansas City team in the 3/21/1915 edition of The Kansas City Post.
